I did a rescue on a severely abused black sparkle X-79 some years ago. I stripped the paint and because the poplar wood was paper white, once sanded, I put two coats of a cherry stain on it to bring out the grain. I then did a few coats of Formby's Tung Oil Varnish, as I recall.I have an x79 project I'm debating on what direction I want to go with it.
That looks way better than mine. It looks like someone used a dirty sponge and varnished it lol.I did a rescue on a severely abused black sparkle X-79 some years ago. So, keeping it natural may not be a bad thing.
Yeah, I'd strip it, but I like the natural color! I guess it depends on whether you want the thing to look wild-hair '80s-ish or whether you like the woody look. That looks way better than mine. It looks like someone used a dirty sponge and varnished it lol.
