Sorry about the not-so-nice NGD. I am always worried about opening up a the case of a shipped guitar and finding something like that. Really hard to tell regarding impact on value. Pictures would help the group get a better idea of the required repair and maybe provide some thoughts.
Yeah, sorry, I meant to do that. Here’s one shot – it’s a pretty clean break, so having it glued back carefully and a little finish touchup should make it look fine. It’s definitely not unbroken now, though, which is a bit of a bummer.

It shipped in the original case. Kind of a strange angle, I guess that was necessary to fit it in a regular size guitar case?

Looks like an easy fix. Hopefully the seller will offer some compensation.

I've sold two guitars here now on the forum and both sales seemed like the customer was super happy about everything that I know of

Hi Franknputer,

My first X-79 arrived with that exact break. I made a claim against the shipping company (I think it was UPS) and was able to get them to pay me $225 to repair it. I took it to a luthier in San Francisco who did the repair.

Since then, whenever a guitar is shipped to me, I ask the seller to stand the box up, put the shipping label on top and mark all long sides of the box THIS SIDE UP with an arrow to the top of the box as well as FRAGILE written on the box.

That way the headstock is at the top of the box. (If the shipping company follows directions correctly!!)

Best of luck with the repair.

They won't, of course, handle it that way. But it does give you a better chance at collecting if/when they break something.

The only thing that will protect against a break like that is proper packing. The cases don't do a good job of supporting the neck, so they need to be exceedingly well packed to support the neck and keep the headstock away from the case wall. I've seen people pack them with nothing but bubble wrap under the headstock which just makes it worse.

I have to agree. That case doesn’t look like it protects the headstock very well. The guy I bought it from wrapped the case well, but the guitar was inside by itself.

Anyway, reverb contacted me with a partial refund offered to cover the repair, so at least I can proceed with getting it fixed. When I get it back from my tech, I’ll post that NGD thread with pictures. Thanks again for all the input!

Hope the repair goes well! I have never had a guitar damaged in shipping (yes, I know I just cursed myself by typing that) but it still scares me to ship vintage guitars as you can’t just return them and get a replacement. The acclimation period for me is the worst part as it is sitting right there and I want to open it and inspect it but I know I should wait!

The last guitar that got shipped to me a couple weeks ago came in a non-original hardcase. The guitar was a vintage M-75 and the case was one designed for a guitar with a flat headstock like a tele. The only thing supporting the guitar when it was laying flat in the case was the end of the body by the harp tailpiece and the tip of the headstock! I still can’t believe it made it to me without a headstock break.

Hi all! Found this thread while looking for information about the Guild X-79. A couple of years ago I came across the X-79 and at the moment I am the happy owner of three different modifications.

I would like to know more information about the modification with a thicker body and strato-shaped cutouts for the arm and belly. I got the JJ French version. Has anyone else come across such modifications of X-79? I didn't find much information about it.
