@ Hans : I did my search on the internetband I think that the bridge you are suggesting is a roller bridge.

No, the bridge you researched is the 'new' style # 2400 bridge. What I suggested was the older style that unfortunately has the same model number; the one that was also used on the Nightbird!

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

I believe this is the bridge Hans is talking about (this one from a Nightbird X2000):

I love my Mars X170T (it's my current avatar). GAD's reviews tell you pretty much everything you need to know. Mine's a wonderful player and feels "just right" and sounds great, ,too.

As a slight veer, ABM has a 12 string, 12 saddle adjustable bridge. I don't know of anyone on the forum who has a Guild NS electric, but that might be a good upgrade for the stock bridge. I'm definitely keeping that one in my back pocket for later!

I'm another X-170 lover. As GAD mentioned above the tone of the X-170 is gorgeous. My X-170 has SD-1 pickups and I would urge you not to be turned off if you find an X-170 with SD-1s. The SD-1s are something special unto themselves. Hard to describe sound but I would say they are a little warmer and a little less metallic sounding than the HB-1s.

As you can see in my avatar, my two Guilds--a 1973 X500, and a 2009 X170.
Both beautiful guitars.
Love them both.

I also have a 1999 X-170. I know the vintage thanks to Hans. I bought it used from the Guitar Center website, which advertised it as a 1994. So I thought I was getting HB-1 pickups. I was bummed, but Hans encouraged me to give the Fender pickups a fair shot. It seems there isn't much love here for them, but I love them. The sound is warm, balanced and restrained, such that I find it super responsive to soft playing all the way to digging in. I only play clean tones on the neck pickup for jazzy sounds. And the nut is wide (I think a big 1 11/16"), while I've read that the pre-Fender X-170's have a thinner nut that doesn't work for me.

I had a 160 and couldn't bond with it, mainly due to the narrow nut and finding the HB1s too dark. Shame, as I really like the 160/170 body shape and depth.

Last time I looked, there are three for sale near me (Hudson valley, LI and I think CT.) I have to restrain myself daily. Got to hold one once for a minute ... loved the size, the balanced feel.) Were financial matters more settled, that's one of the Guild avenues I'd head down.
