Years back Jay Pilzer of New Hope Guitar Traders sold one with a maple neck with the "foot" style headstock. I don't know if it was stock or if some one swapped the neck off of another 1980's solidbody.

Yea the pointy "cake cutting" head are had to get used to on the 1980's Guilds. I did see Guild advertising literature a while back that showed a picture of a T250 with a neck like a Guild Dominator. It was, IMV, an improvement. The Dominator and the T250 are the same scale (25 1/2") so would likely be a direct replacement.

I've not seen one with a maple board.

When I owned my T-200, I pulled the neck off, and replaced it with a "Blade" headstock neck from a S-270 or S-280 or something. I just couldn't deal with the pointy thing.

Don't worry, I swapped it back when I sold it.

My fallow Guilders,

Is this type headstock what you call "cake cutter"?
http://www.guildsofgrot.com/images/full ... cX-100.jpg

and is this one "blade" and "foot"?
http://www.guildsofgrot.com/images/full ... onator.JPG

Is that what you guys mean?

As far as I know, the only Guild solidbody with a maple fretboard is the S-280 and/or S-281 Flyer. And the headstock on those was curvey on the treble side, a bit like a Fender tele. I suspect that's what Kap'n had.

I think the cake cutter is sometimes called "heavy metal." Or just "HM." A dominator would be "SM." But I think Matsickma meant "detonator." That's what Graham calls his dog.

Hi Darryl,

Some of this funny Guild nomenclature on the 1980's solid body guitar is used in Ted Beesleys book: Guitar History Volume #5- Guild Guitars, The Bold Strummer, Ltd.

You are correct. I meant Detonator and not Dominator.

A few other examples are shown below:

T250 with "Cake Knief" Head:

Liberator with "Blade" Head:

S281 Flyer with "Foot" Head (one of many different styles):

Your description was pretty accurate. Hope that clears thing up a bit.

Mat,

That sunburst must be rare, maybe one of a kind. And is it ash? The color is exactly what I like in Guild bursts--that peachey center.

"Cake knife" and "foot" seem the clearest descriptions to me because that's what those look like.

I think we need a term other than "blade" because it sounds too much like "cake knife." (Or call the blade "bayonet" and change the name of the "cake knife.")

Let's have a name-the-headstock contest. The winner gets a kilo of smoked Gouda, complements of Hans and Walter.

Has anybody seen a maple board on the ones other than the foot?

Kap'n,

Hmmmm. I think we need a vote--preceded by nominations. I'd say it's the liberator that looks more like a blade. And maybe the S-280-281 could be called an "instep."

What do you think about calling the cake knife an "ice skate"? That sounds good to me now, but tomorrow I'll probably think it's lame. (I'm a flip-flopper.)

One thing I'm sure of. Dont let a flare get close to your nut.

Here's my $.02 for all it's worth...

I always thought this was the "Offset" headstock;

And this was the "Cake Knife headstock;

Grot,

Your collection is the gold standard for Guild pics. I assume it's the first place all forumites go to for Guild pics. So thanks for going to all of the work. And btw, if anybody wants to know why I like Guild bursts, your line-up from just 1966 alone answers the question.

The fact that you see the Liberator headstock as both cake knife and blade shows that it would be hard to come up with terms we all agree on.

I think that Liberator headstock has a nice, clean aesthetic about it.
Complemented totally by the Guild Liberator script.

Maybe that could be the "B-24" headstock !

Yes, and the binding too, imho. What I like about the flyer is that it's shaped more like a Fender.

I'd like to find either shape with a maple fretboard, and without all the lock nut hoo-hah.

I believe that LeBlaze is a member of this forum... I can honestly say that I am more interested in his 86 Bluesbird. However, I just got two Guitars from Guildzilla - the pointy purple (PPG) one and a Mark III. I'm out of the guitar market for a month or so. I really like the Kent Armstrong pickups he put on the PPG. Some time back I got a S-261K from him. I like the Amstrongs better than the California pickups on the S-261K. Both of these guitars have pointy heads,, Kalers and 5-way switching. Having once owned a 89 Strat.. I have to say that Guild made a better guitar in those days.

The Mark III is simply marvelous. Great sounding... and you get to tune it after every song

Bump!

This article has pictures of my T250 and two of my favorite solid body guitars that I foolishly sold years ago. The White S281 was very unique in that it had a mid frequency "tone" control and also a 10 or 20 dB boost switch. The blue Liberator was a basic model but excellent and easy to handle player.

I think the terminology used to describe the Guild headstock shapes evolved a bit since this was written.
