McMurtry uses a lot of alternate tunings. I am not positive but I think he is in open G with this song. So capoed at the 7th fret that would be in D. Maybe he keeps the low E string in E? So that capo 2 would give him the F# to go with the D. I had this one figured out years ago but it has been a while. Anyway, his style is great and if anyone has better information I would love to learn more. I have always loved his music.

This gives a good picture of James in top form. I believe the guitar is a Takamine 12 string with 6 strings, it is not a Martin.

He is very partial to Guilds and owns or did own several. I saw him mid-March and he did his acoustic sets with a Guild F30 I believe, but it did not look like the GAD F30 he has played in the past. Talking to him he really likes that Guild.

Harmony H-173 bought in 1960 (retired), Alvarez AC60S 2008, Eastman AC320ce 2008 "Hybrid", Guild D25M 1974, Martin Grand J35E 2009, Martin D12-20 1970, Martin OM-21 2009, Martin 00-15M Custom (full gloss, wide neck) 2011, Voyage-air VAOM-06 2010
"I'm glad there are a lot of guitar players pursuing technique as diligently as they possibly can, because it leaves this whole other area open to people like me."
