Hi All
There is a nice 1976 Mark V up on Ebay if anyone is interested.
It looks like a cedar top. My 1980 is light colored and spruce.
Does anyone know, Hans?, if they did the Mark V in cedar or did they stain it?
Its a great guitar.

Hello RT 66,

The species used for the tops of the classicals went back and forth between spruce and cedar several times. By the mid-'70s most Guild classicals had cedar tops but by 1980 the top of the Mark V was changed back to spruce.

Sincerely,

Hi Hans
Thanks for the reply.
I'd be glad to post a picture, but even tho the Capn gave me directions it'll be a while before I sit down to figure it out. Like Winter?

I'll be glad to email you some pictures cuz I did figure out that much and you can post them on the board if you want. That would be the quickest way.
The Mark V seems to be a whole lot scarcer than the other classicals.
Did they not make very many or people just hang on to them? Or both!
They did use ebony for the fingerboard, Right? It looks like ebony.

Thanks again Hans

Hi Hans,
Stupid question retraction about the ebony fingerboard.
Of course its ebony. Its a Guild!

Sorry about that!
The reason I thought it a bit suspect was because the fingerboard wasn't polished and the grain is obscured.
There is a slight courseness on the very edges and the top of the fingerboard is dulled due to a fine grit sanding, but not taken down the extra steps to make it really shine.
It is merely a cosmetic issue which I can rectify someday.
It still looks good and it takes nothing away from its sound and playability.
