Dear LTG: Im looking to buy a Hoboken made guild mark I-vi model, any model in that range. it must be in excellent or at least very good plus condition with good action and a straight neck, it will be played as well as collected. Im willing to pay a good price, but the guitar needs to be in nice shape. I had a beautiful guild mark I and ii that I mistakenly sold over the years... Hoboken made only please- I think they are braced lighter and have a more resonant sound...

thanks for your help!

Don't discount the Westerly builds, especially those made before Carlo Greco left in 1976. I had a '82 that was great, and in pristine condition, and now have a '74 that's not quite as perfect. I give the '74 the edge, only because of the cedar top. There were no heavy builds in the Mark series. They were Carlo's baby, and avoided the "tank era" of Westerly.

Pretty sure that's my old guitar, and a good one. Did you buy it from @gilded?

Ive played the mark series of guilds live for over 10 years not and I feel the Hoboken ones are defiantly lighter and lighter braced than the westerly ones- the Hoboken are just better, airy clearer sounding guitars to my ear- westerly especially after the early 70's braced their guitars too much and it kills the tone- I love guilds but compared to the earlier acoustics, the ones make after say 73 just don't sound the same and by 1980 are way overbuilt.

In my experience, that's just the steel string guitars. My '74 and '82 Mark Vs were near identical in weight.

I don't know what your proximity to Alabama is, but you can't beat the price on this Mark V. It's not in perfect condition, but if it's anything like my '74, it's a terrific instrument. Seller won't ship.

It is, made a little earlier in '74 than mine. Carlo Greco was still at Guild then, and it's almost certainly a cedar top. The seller won't ship, though.

Hi William, I watched both videos and the presentation this morning, and wanted to say thank you! I now know a lot more about Guild classicals than I did yesterday! Your presentation style is refreshingly clear and uncluttered and I now feel I have a much better grip of the subject.
I have a Westerly MkIII from the ‘80’s which I’m very fond of, but now feel inspired to explore others. (Also to organise my collection better.. turns out I don’t even have photos of the MkIII!) Thanks. Tim

Good luck Tim! Guild classicals are great guitars, especially for the money!

I owned a beautiful 1964 Hoboken Mark 1V. I replaced it with a 75 Westerly Mark V. The Mark V blew away the Mark 1V SO I SOLD THE MARK 1V for twice what I paid for the Mark V... go figure!

sounds like to got a good one then.... most of the later 70's westerly guilds are over braced like the Martin and Gibson acoustics of that era.. enjoy it!

Not the Mark series, especially the Mark V and up. My '74 Mark V is super light, and so was the '82 spruce top that I used to own.
