I have a cousin who just recently bought a dv-6 and I thought it sounded great. The satin finish isn't the nicest and doesn't show off the rosewood, But the dv-6 is a much cheaper solid rosewood guitar then the next step up, which would be a D-50, if he wants to buy new that is.

We still haven't heard enough about the new DV's. How does the DV4 differ tonally from the D40? Same for the DV6 and D50... anyone? If bling is the main difference, I know which way to go if the time ever comes. Also interested in knowing more about the older DV6's; were those built to the same standards as a mahogany equivalent to the DV52?

I love the way the new D40's sound, by the way. Most "alive" new guitar I've heard.

I've had my DV-6 (tacoma) for a couple months and it is a sweetie. It has the rosewood fingerboard instead of the D-50's ebony - The top is not the Red spuce of the D-50, beyond that, I'm not sure of the other differeces. The D-50 may have an arched back, not sure. Guild-o-philes will chime in.......

For under $1000 w/HSC it is a steal - comes with bone nut and bridge pins. It isn't flashy but neither am I and it sure is a tone machine, great balance with medium strings. It works pretty good for fingerstyle, but I've found it really comes into it's own when flatpicked. Great for big strumming power ballads too, a meaty Em7 chord will fill a gym.

I am still trying to decipher the Guild model #'s - it seems the dv6 was also made with mahogany a few years ago?

Good luck in the hunt!

Oh yeah, I almost forgot my cousin's dv-6 that he ordered from musicians friend does NOT have a serial number on the back of the headstock. :?: It has a sticker on the inside with the number, but i couldn't find one stamped in. Is this normal (I can't imagine)?

I don't think they stamped the new ones at all.

I am seriously considering a DV-6. I'm waiting for now, as they are backordered at the nearest dealer to me. I guess they must be popular. :D
I wonder how they compare to the GAD series, as the GAD's also seem to be well regarded.

I've played a couple, thought they both sounded "thumpy."

I bought a Guild DCE5 instead, and it's a great guitar, has that big, balanced Guild rosewood sound.

i wonder what the back ordered status means? Since the Tacoma plant is closing, I assume they have orders left to fill. If your music store has some on order. . .hopefully they'll fill that order before closing their doors!

Ah, just joined the forum, glad to see this thread.

I am having some warranty issues with my basic player (a Martin that I dearly love) and was occasionally entertaining the thought of an "inexpensive" good, solid player guitar. I used to have a Martin D-15 that I'd sold to finance the D-28 I'd eventually pick up. I did like that guitar. I played a few at local shops and none of them caught my attention.

I happened to find a shop with the Guild line and played a few, the D-40 (Havens) and complained because they would not sell it for below MAP (don't blame them, but I was testing to see how good it might get!) The sales guy suggested I try this "other" Guild, the DV-4, that he said was similar but without the frills. I played it and was surprised. To my ears, it was louder and a bit more balanced than the D-40 (could be strings, could be my playing, but subjectively, I liked that individual DV-4 better than that individual D-40). He quoted me, you guessed it, MAP, still a bargain in my opinion, a very D-15 sort of price, low end good basic guitar.

I wandered the internet and found an auction for a DV-4. I bid the minimum bid (was about half retail!) and was sold bidder - where was everyone? I should have the DV-4 here in California by late next week. I sure hope it sounds about as good as the one downtown, it was a sweetie.

I was very impressed by what Guild in Tacoma did with this guitar. Scalloped bracing, all solid woods, bone parts, really clean, articulated sound. This mahogany model probably didn't have a piano inside it (but I understand what you're talking about!) ... but it was just wonderful. Very much like a Martin D-18 if you like that sound, and also very much like a Guild D-40, the nice full, warm, round mahogany sound. It was not at all like a Gibson 50 series of mahogany, they must brace their basic mahogany guitars differently. The Guild was "fuller" to my ears (though I do also like the Gibson sound, it has less midrange or something.)

Wish me luck. I'll come back and tell you about my DV-4 when it arrives.

Thanks for the welcome, this is a good board, I've learned a lot already. I just started another thread asking about the older DV-4 and DV-6 designations and what specs those guitars had. I hadn't known the model numbers were used before and for guitars with different specs (so I'm told!)

I'll get back with some pictures and impressions when it gets here, I am pretty anxious. Have to send my other guitar back for warranty work (two of them in the line!!!)
