Guild D-55 Replacement Tuners

Does anyone make open back replacement tuners that are drop in for a D-55.
Mine is a 2005 from Tacoma.

Tacoma used Grover Rotomatic 102 tuners and the hole in the headstock should have a diameter of .39" (9.9mm).
And the lower hole for the mounting screw is .413" (10.5mm) from the center of the axis.



So you need to find open back tuners which would fit those dimensions.
The Gotoh SXN510 ( https://g-gotoh.com/product/sxn510/?lang=en ) have the same nut/washer, post hole size and only require a new top hole/screw. They are available in gold and with various button options.

Are you having performance issues with the stock tuners or is it just a cosmetic preference for open back tuners?

Thanks for the replies.
I don't want to add a second hole so I will stay with the Grover's.
Some of them are just a bit tight to turn.
I have tried to loosen them but they are still stiff.

Perhaps I will just replace them with new Grover's.

Hey TMG, I know you probably want them to all match and be the same vintage and shiny factor but if there is something wrong with your Grover tuner, they're super cool about either repairing or replacing them (they decide) if you call first and tell them the problem and get a return authorization for the malfunctioning tuners!!

I've been 10 minutes trying to get Image Shack to display images I've stored there and it's not working. It's the guarantee that's printed on the back of the packaging for the set of Grovers that Sandy sent me for my DV72 because we swapped because I wanted the original tuners and he wanted the Waverly's that had been put on it. But I can't get the photos to show.

If you just want to get a couple of tuners repaired or replaced just contact their customer service department and get a return authorization number and then you'll only pay shipping and get either repaired or replaced tuners!!

Keep that in mind!!

The Gotoh TK-7740 is a 18:1 drop in Grover Rotomatic replacement.

I believe the factory is using Gotoh SE700 Open-Gear in Gold. I believe this was started in New Hartford.

You cannot really replace Grover Rotomatic 102 with Gotoh SE700! First TMG does not like to add the second mounting screw hole to the headstock and second the main post holes in the headstock have a diameter of .39" (9.9mm) and SE700s require only 7.5mm/8.8mm holes! Hence my proposal in post #2, which is however irrelevant here as no second screw is requested by TMG.

And Grover makes those tuners still and they’re fairly inexpensive if you wanna full set all shiny and bright!!

A couple of the tuners are stiffer than I think they should be.
One is on the G string and with my left shoulder pain, it is hard to turn.
I may trade it for the E tuner and see if that helps.

The tuners are not all that bad but I have Grover Tuners on other guitars and they are very smooth and easy to turn.
This all started when I changed out the buttons for some nice looking Amber buttons.
The stiff G string tuner striped out the button, so I went back to the stock metal buttons.

I still have a 2007 D55 where I replaced all the Grover tuners with brand new ones that I ordered from an online guitar parts supply. The new ones fit right into all the openings on the guitar headstock. They are authentic and I don't mind at all how they look on the guitar. When I got bought this guitar in 2011 it was "as new", except it had possibly sat somewhere in humid Michigan, and there were small rust specs forming under the gold.

Did you replace closed Grover tuners with closed Grover tuners?
This is what I will most likely do.

Before you go spending a lot of time and money, try this... Take the string off off the offending tuner and on the front of the headstock, where the tuner post comes through, is a nut. Make sure that nut isn’t over-torqued. Loosen it and retighten to finger tight, and just a slight tad more with the wrench. There was one that was way too tight on one of my jumbos, and that was the issue.

And while the tension is off the tuner, try easing out the adjustment screw on the tuner knob.... while there's no tension on it. May help....

I took the tuner off and applied a lot of penetrating lube to it.
Then I worked it back and forth a lot. I found a tight spot and got it worked.
Changed the G tuner with the E tuner.
They all feel good now.
There was something inside the G tuner that was sticking.
It is now turning smooth again after the lube and cranking.

I doubt that I will now need to replace the tuners.
