Welcome to LTG! I know there are at least two members here who have or had the Benedetto designed X-700 so hopefully they'll be by to chime in. In the meantime, we love photos so feel free to post some of your guitar!

Hey there. I have an X700 Benedetto that I’m writing an article about. So far as I can tell the term “Masterbuilt” was used by a collector online who insists that the first few made in Westerly are such. In my conversations with Bob Benedetto I asked him directly and he said there is no such thing as a “Masterbuilt” Guild Benedetto. They’re all “Masterbuilts” since they were all hand made by luthiers directly trained by Bob. Of course if there’s any proof to the contrary I’d love to see it.

That in no way lowers the value or quality of your guitar because they’re all fantastic guitars. We’d certainly live to see pics!

I would add that three of the luthiers who worked on the Benedetto Guilds - Stephen Stern, Paul Waller and Gonzalo Madrigal -- are now Master Builders in the FMIC Custom Shop. Highly skilled individuals!

Welcome to LTG! Yes, many of the Guilds from that time have Jeff's "JT" initials, here 's my year 2000 Bluesbird:

The term "Master Built" was actually used in the Guild catalog (here 2003) during Corona times for the CBB serial numbers (as you had shown to us) and not for the Westerly made GBB serial number X-700s.

The Westerly catalogs showed nothing regarding "Master Built":

You can attach photos (or any file like a PDF) or simply drag and drop them into the text! Or use the little "Insert image" button right next to the "Insert Link" button.

1637928040052.png

Just make sure they are not too big but when inserted you can also change the visible size by touching the corner of the inserted picture and make it smaller.
And all can see them here.
And you can also edit the text after you posted it should it not look like you want it.

Beautiful guitar! I love that burst. From the photos it looks like the binding on the f-holes is mitered in the center points rather than bent through those points. Am I seeing that correctly in the photos?

On this page he claims the first Benedettos were Masterbuilts and somehow better than the rest and that info has been propagated far and wide. I emailed him and asked him about proof and he claimed Bob Benedetto confirmed it, but when I asked Bob directly he said no:

I’ve also seen claims that the first X were actually hand made by Bob, but Bob himself told me that only the prototypes were made by him and that he still has them.

When I asked Bob I said, “It would seem to me that since you trained the luthiers who made the Benedetto Signature Guilds, that they would then all be Masterbuilts” to which he agreed.

In short (so far that I can confirm) there seems to be no subgroup of Benedetto Guilds that were “Masterbuilt” and thus somehow better than other “normal” Benedetto Guilds.

People do like to believe that Westerly is better than Corona, and I get that. My beef is with the use of the term “Masterbuilt” to try and convey that some Benedettos are better than others.
