Al nailed it.

I don't think the picture is a collage or something that involved significant photo editing to create.

It appears at https://www.newyorker.com/culture/c...of-altamont-and-the-murder-of-meredith-hunter

I'm not going to snag pictures from that article because I don't feel like messing with webp format but there is a shot from above the stage that shows the brown box, some of the same people/outfits and that Jack was at that part of the stage.

The sequence of events and visual captures of the Airplane at Altamont would be interesting to see in a time line. The video clip of "Other Side of This Life" (this version annotated as NSFW because of language and nudity) catches Jack playing with a visibly broken A string. The still photo shows the string intact. Also note a pick or something white wedged under the D and G strings or the TRC.

If my skimming is correct the Dead pulled out before playing so it couldn't be a Starfire headstock in the hands of Phil Lesh.

I was living in the East Bay when Altamont happened. Saw the Stones at Oakland Colosseum just before Altamont, but shied away from the latter: just seemed like a bad idea on its face. The "Summer of Love" was already over and the atmosphere on the street had soured and turned pretty ugly, weed and psychedelics having given way to speed and heroin. So I guessed (correctly, as it turned out) that a "free concert" about then was probably not going to end well.

The Oakland HAs used to hang out at a pizza joint called "Pepe's"on Telegraph Avenue at that time. There was often a row of Harleys parked in front and a few patched members milling around on the sidsewalk. I'd always always cross the street and pass it on the other side because once a group of those guys got together, they tended to be volitile and totally unpredictable. It was generally prudent to just steer clear of them all together.

I was going to say it could have been Chris Hillman too, but he had switch to Fender by then.

All of the bands at Altamont having Guild basses would have been a bad omen?
