Im looking into buying a 12 string, to go along with my Guild six string. I dont know what my Guild is? the ss# are is wore off the back of the key board bad enough that I can't read it. and the Id sticker inside has rotted away yrs ago.I do know its a dreadnaught body style & I believe its all mahogney wood. I bought it in san jose in old town in 1974 it has a arch back. all I know is that when I play it, the sound that comes out of it sound as sweet as elfs breath.I love this old beat up guitar, & will probaly be buried with it.Back to the Question. Did guild make a 12 string dreadnaught back in the late 60s or early 70s. I found several 12 string jumbos but no Dreadnauts? I dont want a guild thats been made in china.
They might be nice but I really want to stay with american made guitars.I also own a martin D42 koa.I would appericate any info you guys can give me. Thanks you so much. My E- mail address is twentymules@yahoo.com Dave Cole.

Sounds like you probably have a D-25.

I'm not sure if they made them in the '60's/'70's but they did make them a bit later than that. One of the ones from the '80's would be long before the models made in China.

Here is one on Ebay from 1987.

And another - looks like it's from 1984.

I'm not one of the 12-string experts around here, or even an expert on acoustics in general, but others will be along shortly to help you out with more info.

Welcome to the asylum!

I'm not 100% sure if the 12 string dreads were out in the 60's. The F-212 has mahogany back/sides from the earlier eras.

There sure are 12 string dreads. Check out the D-212. Mahogany back/sides with an arched back. In fact, here is a D212M (all mahogany) on eBay...

The D212 is a sweet guitar. Also check out F112 and F212 Guilds (both are 'hog'); they show up occasionally on eBay.

And welcome to LTG.

Dave, welcome to LTG!!!

Indeed, there's a fairly big stretch of 12er models in the Guild lineup. There were at least two mahogany dreadnaught 12er versions over the years similar to your (probably) D-25 6-string model. And, as Scratch mentioned, there are a number of small F-body (concert shape) mahogany models.

Good luck in the hunt, and again welcome aboard!

Dave,
Welcome to LTG from another Dave! I don't follow the 12-ers that much, but as others have indicated, there have been a number of Guild dreadnaught 12 strings thru the years. Somewhat paradoxically, the first dread 12-ers in the mid-70s were given the "G" prefix... I think the G-212 was mahogany (but probably flat-back?). I'll have to check "The Book" this evening. Then there were the D-212 and D25-12, which I believe were both were spruce-topped 'hog-backed (probably arched?). Might have been other spruce/'hog dread 12-ers... but those are the ones I remember. As for ALL mahogany dread 12-ers... From Hans, I believe there were two models: D15-12 (which would be all 'hog with an arched back, satin or HR finish) and a D17-12 (same, with glossy finish and whie top binding?). I think someone here has a D15-12...

To see what was available, I suggest looking at "The Guild Guitar Book" by Hans Moust. Hans is a regular here on the forum. Hans' book covers only thru 1977 (vol II is in much anticipated by all of us here). For post-'77, Beesley's "Guitar History vol 5: Guild Guitars" gives model names and some specs thru the early '90s.

Again, welcome, and have fun searching!

The G-312 is a rosewood and sitka dred. !978 seems to have been a very good year for many of us. Lots of 1978 G-312 owners hang out here.
