It is almost Garcia's 70th Birthday. Whew! He played a Starfire early on. Maybe I'll celebrate with "Brokedown Palace" or "Attics of my Life," which our friend sang beautifully at our wedding almost 27 years ago.
I miss you brother.

Amen. There is a small but loyal group of Garcia fans here.
Possibly one of the most underrated guitarists in modern rock history.
And bluegrass too.

Jerry was an inspiration to so many, and flat out my favorite guitar player by far. So many styles and influences of his own. Check out Garcia/Grisman on Youtube for some of his best stuff. Of course the Dead too...saw them about 60 times from '85-'95. Never saw him playing a Guild, but he should have! :D

Isn't there a DVD that has Garcia on a train in Canada that features one or more Guilds?

Looks like the drunk dude is playing a Maple Guild and Weir may be on a Guild too, but Jerry is playing a Strat. Never seen that before though, thanks!

Jerry had a real charisma that showed through in his playing, in my opinion.

I have a Jerry Garcia Band DVD at home that has some extra stuff on it. One of the extra items is an extended interview with surviving members from that band (both Jerry & bass player John Kahn were deceased by then).

Someone (possibly the drummer, David Kemper?) states at one point that Jerry's many fans simply wanted to be in the same room with him.

Well put.

while personally i could never get into the dead, i did appreciate the vigor, passion and commitment their fans had for them

a long time ago i was in a band in boston, and the bass player (huge dead head) bailed on a show, claiming the dead were in town and he had to go

.....the town was cleveland

You do know that Dark Star pickups are named after a Dead tune, right?
One of my favorites, in fact.
(Only mentioning since Jack usually gets all the Guild bass recognition around here, I don't remember if you're familiar with the Dead's songbook even though you know about Phil Lesh's Starfire bass usage)

Yes. Even saw the Dead once. They opened for The Band and the main act was The Allman Brothers.

mgod's M-85 was given to him, in a manner of speaking, by Phil Lesh.

I phrased it the way I did because all I know about the Festival Express video is what I have read here.

Y'know I could swear that film actually made the rounds as an independent release in the early '70s and quickly went out of circulation until its recent "revival".
I gotta be honest, when I first stumbled across it I thought it was a bit of a yawner. I think it might have been on a pledge drive for a local PBS station maybe 15 years ago or so, before I had a Guild...otherwise I might have been excited by the "sighting".
I know I wasn't even all that impressed by Janis or the Deads' performances and I never really was fan of the Band. I remember it all sounding way too countrified and laid back for my tastes and too much train time and not enough music.
'Course my memory's been known to be flawed before...

1. The drunk dude is the late Rick Danko of The Band with a Guild F50 maple, Rick's brother still owns Rick's other 1960's F50- a tobacco burst with lots of pick wear into the wood.

2. Bob Weir is playing a Guild F50 rosewood (possible Brazillian?)

3. Jarry may be playing a Tele, it sure sounds like it.

Its a good thing I never saw this back in the day, or I would maybe not be as much of a fan as I was. My ideal of hippiedom was much higher of an expectation than all this.

Wikipedia.com states that the film reels were put in the camerman's garage for 30 (40?) years, before being found and then released.

If anyone bought the "Workingman's Dead" album in 1970 when it was released, then it would be known why they were doing the material in 1970, thats in the film. The style is right off the album, but with a few additional songs in the film.

What amazes me is just how the entire group (Grateful Dead) was able to adapt from their years of psychedelic music into the grass routes country sound, such as they did. And with 2 drummers nonetheless.

Mickey Hart had a permanent place in the band as a second drummer, after his Dad had stolen 10's of thousands of dollars from mismanaging the group in the late 1960's. Was I a Dead fan? Somehow I managed to buy all their early albums when released, though I could really not afford it at the time.

In my formative years my favorite guitar players were Jerry Garcia, Johnny Winter and Frank Zappa. Who would have thought Johnny would be the last one standing? Thanks John

Lesh's "Alembicized" Starfire II, known as either "The Godfather," or "Big Brown," was the prototype, along with Jack's Starfire, for the Alembics to follow. It had more knobs that a Mercury 7 space capsule (sounded better than one, too!). Both Weir and Garcia played electric Guilds (Weir had a stunning Starfire V in Maple), and Weir also played acoustic Guilds, but I don't know if Garcia did. As for me, I loved the country Dead, in fact, it was my doorway into true country, which I love to this day. Of course, I still love rock and roll!

"Yes. Even saw the Dead once. They opened for The Band and the main act was The Allman Brothers."

That would be one of the largest rock concerts of all time 600,00 to 750,000 at Watkins Glen Racetrack in July '73 @ "Summer Jam." (Actually, the Allman's were not the main act, it was equal billing.)
More people than I've ever seen in my life.
Unfortunately, I don't remember the Dead's set that Sat. Morning, because I was orbiting planet Zippy for a few hours and, even though my physical body was there, my astral body was not! :D
