Ditto edwin's comment, @mgod. Would love to hear what was being considered. So, what was your objection to the name (if you don't mind me asking)? I've always thought that "Dark Star" was a very cool and certainly recognizable name for a pickup, but before this thread I'd always thought it was a reference to the old John Carpenter "Dark Star" movie. Imagine my chagrin. :D

SG bass? One of the recent ones? Or you mean an EB?

I honestly can't remember what was being considered. I thought it was too obvious. But in the end, it proved to work,

I did a spectaular drawing for the line too - kinda pen and ink- sorta looks like R. Crumb had the commission. I wonder wherre it is? Fred probably has it.

A 1968 EB-3. It was pretty messed up when I got it, so I didn't feel bad about modding it.

I am sure that the Bisonics on the EB bass changed things for the betters and dramatically! And the bridge work. Nice upgrades!

Looks to me like there's plenty of space in the middle there for a 3rd Dark Star

EDIT: Just thought I'd add, the above comment was mostly in jest. I've never tried a triple-bisonic bass personally. The thought has crossed my mind, but I've been hesitant to do so, since each bisonic has such large slug pole pieces with quite a magnetic pull and I'd be worried that having 3 of those along each string, especially on a short scale, could cause some issues with string vibration.

Hey Edwin, I'm pretty sure you've seen my EB-3. It was bought as a carcass on ebay, and put together by Gil Chavez around a pair of Dark Stars, With a Finnish-made Alembic-style bridge with sustain block, and pickguards cut Cippolina-style. And its got a slot head, because of my fetish. And NO varitone.

I'd like to get a get an SG bass and put Bisonics in it but I hesitate because the last SG bass I had sounded atrocious.
The craftsmanship and playability was tip top, though. Perhaps if I try one out in person first I sould determine if it was doable, sound wise.
It would be another great shortscale to have.

I have. I've long admired it. Mine came with an extra pick guard, but it was atrocious as the holes dug into the front of the body. Mine also doesn't have the varitone, but some idiot epoxied the knob to the switch and there's no way to get it off. I guess it looks cool, but I would love to put a master volume there instead. I've tried it active and passive and prefer the passive arrangement.

I assume Marko made your bridge. I had one of his on my Starfire for a while, until Alembic installed one of theirs.

Thanks Frono! I couldn't find the pic. Didn't realize that you had it! But count on you...

Yeah, Fred has the original drawing on the side of his fridge. I didn't know that RT suggested Dark Star. I still would have objected.

I had a converted EB as well. Perhaps purchased from Edwin? Bought during the Dudepit days. I recall it was said that Fred himself was there when routing was done to accommodate the DerekStar pickups. Or so someone said.

A little later I modded up a BTS JS-II with DerekStars and liked the feel in the hand better. So Gibby went to an old friend who uses it to this day. But fear not, I put a buy-back option on it when he bought it from me.

Fondly remembering the "serious discussions" (flame wars) between mgod and Chris Solberg (maricopaa) on the Dudepit.

If that's my old bass, it was a sweet one! I sent it to Fred and he installed the pickups, which were some of the first he made.
