I'm curious what the finish is on my electrics. To date I have or had:
'73 Starfire IV
'77, '78 and a '79 S300A-D
'99 X170
'99 or so X170 MARS
'00 Starfire 4
I know there's a lot of misinformation out there re: Poly vs. Nitro finishes, but I'm interested in finding out what mine are/were for no reason other than curiosity.
When I pulled the knobs off of my '00 Starfire, there was a clear difference in the finish tint under the knobs. I've not really seen that on poly guitars that I remember. With this being less than 10 years old, it made me wonder if Guild/Fender was still using Nitro then. The difference gave me hope that it might eventually look like my '73 did with that awesome aged blond look.
The '77 S300A-D I just got was clearly stored in the case for most of its life as it looks brand new. My old S300 had aged considerably regarding the tint and color of the finish/wood, but of course I'd played it plenty over the years, both outside and in.
I'd never really cared, and sort of assumed that my S300 was poly because it was so shiny, but I know that's not really a valid indicator. I've felt some REALLY thick poly Strats that felt like they were made of plastic, and I've played some killer nitro Gretsches that just felt wonderful. I also know it's not that cut and dry.
Like I said, I'm just curious.
