I love my Super Champ X2 combo, by the way. It is a custom built combo with a 12" speaker. IMG_7940.JPG

I used to teach my electronics repair guys "50% of the time, the source of the problem can be found with a thorough visual and functional inspection."

You just proved my point. I hope the circuit cleaner spray did the trick; at least you got the noise to disappear temporarily so you know you're on the right track.

Pretty much all the pots on my Crate 125W Acoustic amp were noisy or crackly. Sprayed 'em all down with circuit cleaner while twisting the knobs, problem solved.

I don’t have 1/10th the soldering experience you do, but I’d say your 50% has got to be 80% (probably because I don’t have 1/10th the soldering experience).

The guy who mentored me in networking/telephony had a mantra for troubleshooting: physical layer first. Put another way, it’s always the copper. We would spend hours troubleshooting convinced there was some weird protocol or configuration problem and he’d walk in and find a cable that had been rolled over by someone’s chair.

I agree!
Unfortunately the components and build on this amp is fairly feeble. The on-board pots are set and then painted/sealed. Once the boards were installed the posts were siliconed. The input jack is board mounted and very cheap. As are all the setting , volume pots. So you can troubleshoot a bit. The ic 's are surface mounted for the most part. It's a $300. Amp, so.....

they so uh nd really good. Better than most vintage amps I chased back in the day. It almost nails the tone of my original SC. An d is a better plug and play, in channel one, than my first year Blues Jr. was. With my Strat it is perfect! Wish it had spring reverb!
Like the Ox blood! 12" is really cool.
