Not that many of you are not famous in your own right, but it would be interesting to know who you have played with that we all might know. When I was 18, I got a summer gig at a resort in Northern Wisconsin, six nights a week - kind of like a scene out of Dirty Dancing. I showed up not knowing who I would be playing with. I had a name - Ronnie Kemper - but in the pre internet days good luck finding anything out. To my surprise it was just me and him - he on piano/vocals and me on drums. Talk about an odd combo, but it worked really well. I was into jazz anyway, so learning all his classics was fun. I only learned later how famous he had been in the big band era. He had a number of hit recordings including the original recording of the "Teapot Song". Yes, I'm a little teapot...

Sadly no pictures to prove it. In that day no one had cameras out 24/7. I wish I had known more about him at the time. We did not talk about his past, or music at all. Days were for relaxing, fishing and reading. From 8-1 it was show time.

So look him up. He had some fun novelty hits that the Dirty Dancing crowd loved. He was a great musician and, for a summer, an unexpected friend.

I've played with many people and many friends, all of whom I considered to be famous in one way or another, and none of whom any of you would ever have heard of or known. The closest was likely Kenny Pederson, an extrordinary percussionist I grew up with, and played with in NW Wisconsin and also at the University in Wisconsin, La Crsosse. (home of Dave's Guitars) Sadly, Kenny passed away from cancer several years back. I still miss that guy, he always made me laugh.

I have played in about five bands with Vern Miller, bassist with the famous 60's garage band, The Remains. He's one of my best friends. I have also jammed with the 1997 version of The Yardbirds, including founding members Jim McCarty and Chris Dreja. I also jammed with Jimmy Vivino, Mick Ronson, T-Bone Burnett, Rob Stoner, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Bob Neuwirth, Jon Paris, steel guitarists Jeff Newman and Curley Chaulker and a few others in Nashville. There might be a few more I'm leaving out.

I could namedrop several classical (as in music genre) performers I have shared the stage with but that seems to miss the spirit of this thread.

I've never played with anyone anyone might have ever heard of ever. However, I have played a few jam parties with some guys pretty much everyone has heard. There were from popular local band that never made it but went on to sing backups on a bunch of Nile Rogers produced records and toured the world with David Bowie and Billy Joel. One of them was on countless commercials and was the voice of one of the Pepsi Uh Huh girls from the Ray Charles spots.

During my younger active playing days in the 90s, I moved in some music circles where a few went on to join some pretty renowned rock bands. And although I'd hung out with them often, we were never bandmates so they don't really count. I did have the pleasure to be part of an impromptu band that backed Katie Webster and Honeyboy Edwards for a set at a blues festival, which was memorable.

I expect everyone's sick of my prior blabbing about my whirlwind tour with Bobby 'Boris' Pickett in the early 70s. I was one of the Cryptkicker Five. 🎃 We played the Monster Mash. Later we also played a benefit for Gram Parson's roadie who had stolen Gram's body and cremated it in Joshua Tree National Park (in accordance with a mutual promise. He had some legal bills.). The young guitarist in the group -- Brian Ray -- was 'discovered' at that benefit and played with Etta James the following 10 years before getting called to play with Paul McCartney at the Superbowl. He's played live gigs with Paul ever since.

My luthier's wife used to date Mickey Dolenz, and my luthier has met Mr. Dolenz. Oh, wait. So have I, as well as Davy Jones, but I think I was 12 at the time.

That's as close as I can get, I think.

Reportedly Leon Russell played keys on the original recording. I guess he was doing studio work way back then.....

Yes - he was part of the famed group of L.A. session musicians known as The Wrecking Crew.

There is a great movie of the same name about them:

The young guitarist in the group -- Brian Ray....
Also, Brian's sister, singer Jean Ray, came along as one of the backup singers. Talented and gorgeous lady, RIP! Reportedly she was Neil Young's inspiration for Cinnamon Girl.

I was friends w/ Sky Saxon (from the ‘60s band The Seeds), played a show and a couple recording sessions with him:

Had various run-ins with other ‘60s rock stars in one way or another too!
