I just picked up my second Guild in a month!! First it was a very nice DV52 and now I found a basically unused (some would call it New Old Stock) 1998 F30 with HR finish. The plastic is still on the pickguard.
My question concerns the finish. I have only seen HG finishes before and am wondering if there is anything that should be done to maintain this kind of finish. I feel like I should use some kind of oil or something to protect it from dirt, sweat, drool or single malt scotch.

By the way, I love this little guitar. A nice complement to the dread.

DV52 finish question

Chetmz,
Don't use oils or polish on a matte finish. The guitar will adsorb the oil and result in discoloration of the top over time. I learned this the hard way on a DV52 I used to own. I used lemon oil and darkened the top. I actually liked the way it looked but it was no longer the original finish color. All you need to do on that guitar is occasionally clean it with a slightly damp cloth and dry it off.
Great guitar by the way, enjoy it. :)

Thanks AZED
Since I posted this a few days ago I have heard from various folks with the same basic advice: just keep it clean and wipe it with a damp cloth.
I do like the guitar but I don't think I would buy another instrument with this finish. The aesthetics don't do it for me. A matte finish is fine for an old beat up Strat or Tele but for an acoutic, I just like the shine of a nice high gloss.

Just another voice saying...DO WHAT AZED SAID!!!...just wipe off after each use with a damp cloth and then dry and polish gently with a clean soft cloth. I never use any kind of polish or wax as they will only build up and swirl around.
That being said, I did once use Murphys Oil Soap and water once to remove years of polish, smoke and unknown gunk from a old Gibson J45 sunburst . It worked great and the finish looked new.
Also if your guitar has a matt finish neck, it will, with heavy use, become a high-gloss neck from your natural hand oils, even with constant wipe-downs.Thats how to know the guitar was played-in.
