Hi Guildsters. I'm looking to add a Guild to my stable. I hear almost nothing about this guitar from the end of the Fender era. Anyone have one? Played one? How do they compare to the JF-30, the F-50, the new F-40? Thanks.

They were made only in New Hartford, and only for a few years. Mine is the best bang for the buck guitar I own, along with my Gibson WM45. Highly recommended, if you can find one. They're so good that people that own them don't sell them. https://flic.kr/s/aHskk9vJAj

I cannot believe the prices they're getting for F50s these days. I mean, $4,300 for a 1973 in fair condition? You'd be lucky to find one under $2,000. I'd say the JF30 is a comparable jumbo -- just has less bling. Most of these are going for between $1,000-1,500, which I also think is high, considering my near mint burst Corona-built JF30-12 was under $1,000, but I guess the times they are a-changin'.

Sweetwater says new F40s are solid mahogany back and sides, not arched maple.

I have an F-50 Standard too. I haven't picked it up in months for reasons that aren't music related, and the darned thing was still in tune. It isn't going anywhere. ;-)

Mods, I am sorry for the confusion. I found one of these for sale and was looking for community opinions on the guitar generally, as I have never seen one. I wasn't looking to buy one of these from someone here. You can take this down.

No need for that! Do you have a link for the guitar? Somebody here might be (or even should be) interested. If it's anything like mine or Default's, it's a fantastic instrument.

Impression-wise, I don't have anything of the same body style to compare it to, but...
I would say that my F-50 is slightly easier to play than a dreadnaught due to the body shape. I'm not overly crazy about the satin finish, but that can be changed with some hand buffing. Mine came string with mediums, and the guitar roars with mediums on it. For lack of a better description, I think the maple sounds drier to me than a rosewood guitar, but I am not good at subjective descriptions. I think it sounds fantastic with lights too. The cutaway makes playing lead on it pretty easy.
Mine has a pickup installed - I don't know off the top of my head the brand that was installed at the factory, but it sounds good. Speaking of that sort of thing, stick a microphone in front of it, and it really records well.
I like mine a lot. I'm sure there are superior instruments out there, but I'm not the guitarist that going to be able to tell you what they are.
If you can get a chance to play one, that's what I would suggest. The F-55 I think, is the designation now, and we'll have heard some very good things about them.
