The Guild Gimbri. made before they moved production from North Africa to the USA:

Seriously, though: an interesting video about an instrument of which I was previously unaware. I've listened to quite a bit of kora and oud music, but never this.

Dude! Focus: it's about the music!

Though you could ask for her phone number in the comments...

I'm not an ethnomusicologist either but I do think someone is stretching to make the claims that are made.

If you want an origin story for the electric bass you can go to the double bass or to the guitar. There is nothing unexplained that requires a connection to non-Western instruments. That said, if you are looking at the "role" of the "bass" in an ethnic context then this is fascinating especially since the role has evolved and one of the forces driving the evolution is players whose influences cross genres.

Agreed. Michael League is the bass player for the band Snark Puppy. Not sure how that makes him an expert on bass guitar history.

But, the video itself is cool!

Pretty much my reaction as well: I wasn't trying to rewrite history by posting this. Just thought it was interesting.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing! Gotta love Julia Hofer. Not just a pretty face, but very talented and a sunny, genuine personality. There's a lot of great content on youtube featuring her. Can't help but wonder if I would be a better bassist today if I had had access to Julia videos back in junior high... sure would have made bass lesson's more... captivating 😁
