DV-4 (and 6) not new model designations?

I just found out (from a European dealer) that the DV-4 and DV-6 (announced as new models recently, with solid wood, bone, scalloped bracing and low price) are not really new model names. The DV-4 and 6 were produced in the 90's with different specifications. I wonder, does anyone know what the specs were on these older ones? I'm just curious, and looking to avoid confusion if selling or buying on the used market.

I'm waiting on a DV-4 to be delivered to me next week (a new one). I'd played one locally and thought it about the finest sounding inexpensive glued up piece of wood I'd ever had in my hands.

Hello Clark,

Not exactly a dealer but I am from Europe! No problem though!

Questions like these are really hard to answer completely, so I will give you the basic one:

The D-4 from the '90s was basically a trimmed down version of the D-25, without the gloss finish. The DV-4, which was introduced a little later was a similar guitar but with a solid braced back, unlike the D-25 and the D-4, which both had arched laminated backs.

The DV-6 from the '90s was one step up from the DV-4 ( solid back) with shaved braces, herringbone inlay around soundhole, white bindings and gold hardware.

Both the DV-4 and DV-6 were mahogany dreadnoughts with spruce tops.

You can easily tell the '90s versions apart from the recent Tacoma models because they have a completely different design headstock. The '90s versions have the tapered 'snakehead' style headstock.

Hope this helps!

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Hans, you're following me around! :D Glad we both use the same names over on UMGF and here, easy to notice.

Thanks for the info, that helps me put it into perspective. Learning about American guitars from a European guy, I like that. I thought your website meant you were dealing in guitars, should not assume such things, sorry. But heck, you seem as smart as any dealer I've met.

Chicago of course
I found my '99 Westerly DV4 at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music's "Garage Sale" two years ago. It had the infamous crack from the bridge to the lower bout, repaired but cosmetically blemished. On Saturday it was for sale for $300. I almost bought it. I came back back when the doors opened on Sunday and it was marked down to $200. Ahem. Yes, I bought it. What a steal. Gorgeous instrument with that wonderful, woody mahogany rumble. I'll never part with it. Just added the GAD 50 a few days ago 'cause I wanted a RW. Love this one, too, but the DV4 will always stand as my intro to Guild...now if I can just find that '74 D25...
