In the case of Richie Havens, his percussive style beats the snot out of the top of the guitar.
In my case, it allows me to play right handed guitars left handed without looking too stupid. :oops:

Don't forget Bonnie Raitt's double pickguard F50...I think it looks cool on a big and bold jumbo like the F50 where hard strumming is to be expected and the top is big and wide, but I suspect it's probably not good for the tone on a smaller body where it can leave too little surface to vibrate!

Another famous example is John Denver who played a double guard Jumbo.
The recent Ritchie Heavens model goes with the 2 pickguards as standard.
But in the early years, was this option on special order?
