A friend of mine owns a 1974 JSII Bass and he has installed Black Nylon Flat Wound Strings as well.

I have something close:

It had some kind of black nylon strings when it came to me, but I replaced them with LaBellas.

Oh are we doing Fretless with black tape strings now? I got one of those!

It came with roundwounds on it but I had to get them off so I swapped the strings with another bass. The blacks sure look better!

I have the black tape strings on a '67 Fender Coronado. I think it gives it a bit more of an upright bass tone. Not for everybody, but I like them.

That's the reason I always hear from people who use them. And "back in the day" black strings had a coolness factor because the only other visual alternative was chrome colored.
