I’ve read just about everything I can find about this guitar, but there’s not alot to be found. Lots of brief yet positive reviews online. Searching this forum on my phone is turned up a thread from 2015 but I couldn’t find anything newer. Does anyone here own one and if so what has your experience been? Thank you

Welcome to LTG! Can't remember who might have one. So you are right, not a lot of discussion. Guild had put up a few videos, but you probably watched them already.

Thanks for those video links, very inspiring. My Gretsch 5420 is my go to guitar yet I’m in the mood to buy another guitar that is distinctly different and someone posted on the Gretsch Pages forum asking if anyone had experience with the modern T-50 and no one there had, that’s where I learned anout it.

It looks great, maybe a bit pricey without a case at just under a grand but still.

There seem to be very few shops who even have one available!

Ralf, thanks for the tip. He could be the only guy owns one of these! I sent him a note through Sweetwater

Seems this topic is about the Newark Street T-50's but can't help myself....

So I've got one of the first T-50's......a T-50B actually.

Its got what I think is a 1960 serial number (14339) on the headstock but also printed on a '61 style label.
Hans are you there?

Its definitely been played a lot.....

The Guild script headstock logo is there but very faint....but mostly rubbed off.
A friend of mine thinks the finish wear on the back is from "belly sweat" not buckle rash.
Had to throw that in and I know its kinda gross to think about but he insisted I should make the distinction.
But if one looks at the finish on the front, and leaving everything to the imagination, it makes sense.

I bought this from someone selling odds and ends in South Carolina over 10 years ago but not from the original player.
So with no backstory we like to think it got some regular use in roadhouses and bars for most of its days.
It sure did need a good cleaning!

New frets absolutely......the originals were almost worn down to the board up and down the neck.
A great Franz pickup ......it sounds fantastic and is a joy to play.
The original knobs were completely corroded. I had a pair of these oddball amber yellow ivory knobs from a '59 T-100 and they looked appropriate.

The amp is '59 66J and perfectly at home with this guitar.

Hello Zizala,

Yes, that's one of the earlier ones. The earliest ones I've seen were done a little before that. I gave 1961 as the introduction year in my book, but it turned out to be a couple of months before the end of the year 1960; same for the introduction of the oval label!

Sincerely,

Hey all, thanks for looking in!

And thank you Hans.....its been awhile!
I've never quite known if it was a '60 to a '61 but leaned toward its being a '60 just because of that stamped serial number.
.....or maybe it was that certain neck profile and general funkification....
Anyway your info seems to justify my indecision and in fact it now seems right to call it a '60 after all.

Its fun to think about and to know, but I'll always wonder who was it that played this guitar so completely.....
Use but no abuse....as my friend said to me, "it knows more tunes than we ever will"

And to think guitars like these weren't so popular in the '60's and thereafter for awhile.
But this one guy by necessity or preference sure squeezed a lot out of it and left it behind for me to wonder about.
(and play of course....)

I had the Newark St. version and I discovered I was not a one pickup (neck in particular) guy and I never have liked sunburst electrics. Why did I buy it? Loved the concept (simplicity of design and no cutaway) and love Guilds but for me at least I found it uninspiring. I played it through my Fender, Ampeg and Vox amps and nothing worked so I sold it. But maybe I should have done more research? There just wasn't a lot out there regarding this model. I played an Epi similar version and preferred the P90 pups on that one over the Guild but don't let my input stop you. Buy one with a good return policy. I took a hit on mine.

Mark thanks for your post, do you think the issue was the pickup? Did you consider replacing it?

Sorry for the delay in responding Chris. I wouldn't spend the money to replace a pickup in a not inexpensive guitar. The Epiphone (Century?) version I thought sounded better. But remember that was me and you might love the pup.

The second video sounds very much like what I remember with mine. It just sounds a little too woody/thumpy? Again personal tastes vary.

I keep wanting to ask the guy in the second video to please tune the guitar :) I’ve heard some compelling examples of the guitar and some underwhelming ones. They seem pretty spendy at 1 grand w/o a case, if I find a used one with a case at about 750 I might roll the dice.
