Do you keep your acoustic in a case or leave it out?

Just curious where you keep your acoustic. I'm new to acoustics and I have read a lot about how you should keep it in a case when not in use. I prefer to keep it out...mostly because it looks cool in my office and it's a motivational tool to practice (I mean it's right there looking at me all the time...). I bought a humidity thing and my home office stays between 46-56% humidity. Just wondering what you do with yours when not in use.

I have a ridiculous number of guitars. Guitars stay in their cases at all time unless I'm playing them with the exception of the four electrics I have hanging on my office walls.. I don't even own a guitar stand any more.

At the current time, I have four of my Guilds hanging, one on a stand, and one in a case... guess which one doesn't get played?

I should note, however, that all are in my humidified basement "train/guitar" room, one of two designated "NO CAT ZONES" in our house... (the other no cat zone is the furnace/storage/tool room).

Then it should be fine keeping it outside the case. I've always kept mine in cases, with damp sponges in a baggie, because the humidity was consistently below 40 in the house. After recently moving, though, the humidity is now between 45% and 55%, so I could keep them out, but.... then I've got nowhere to put them. So they're in their cases.

Always in the case when I'm not playing. Too many hazards (real and imagined) to contend with to leave them out.

One in it's case unless I'm playing it. One on a stand where I can grab it at any time.

Always in the case unless being played. Humidified in the winter (heating) months.

This comes up almost as often as "which strings?"

The arguments in favor of always cased or in hand are humidity control and protection from damage. If you have children, pets or an inattentive cleaning staff you probably want protection.

If it is out it is a nice decoration and much easier to pick up and play when the urge hits. If you are trying to develop good practice habits not having the "friction" of opening the case actually helps you do so.

Once you figure out what is (more) important to you, the answer should be obvious.

Cased. If I had a safe, uncluttered, humidified music room I would have them out. However I don’t.

Right now. 6 string on the wall, 12 string in it's case. However, that is not always the case.

Unless you are going to be knocking them over or banging into them it ain't gonna hurt to leave it out...and you just might play it more.

Here we have a new member and this topic comes up and I'm thinking Al should be here to type endlessly about keeping guitars in their case except when being played!! Of course, Al and I have been known to have a disagreement from time to time. But he's not here and I keep all mine out on stands. There are 8 guitars here in the house and they're all easy to grab and play at any time. Two whole house humidifiers going 24/7/365. If I had to go get the case, lay it down, open it up, and take the guitar out and then repeat that process at the other end when I'm done, I'd never play it. So they're out. If you've got kids and large pets and such it would be a different answer, but definitely easier out.

I read somewhere that John kept his guitars in their cases and Paul felt that they would have written 4 more albums together if John hadn’t done that
