IMO modern Guilds are better than vintage ones as they are more lightly built,my Westerly JF30-12 was an excellent guitar but very heavy, my new F512 is more resonant.
And since we talking about cats this time, Ergor the Ferocious, who is strangely intimidated by acoustic guitars. I also post his current nemesis.

Wulf & the cat! Beautiful!
I had to take this picture a few seconds ago. Sorry, it’s my D-18, the D55 is downstairs because I programmed some mixer settings just in case there will be gigs again. There will be gigs again ... :)

When does older end and modern start?
I would put it at Tacoma (mid-'05 to '08) when Adi was introduced for bracing and some tops, allowing the builds to become a bit lighter.
Tacoma also introduced several technical innovations including the "notorious"' Contemporary series' neck attaching system, and the single truss rods in 12's, and the dual action truss rod.

I would say Corona (late '01-mid '04) was the last of the "older" build styles as Corona's builds were based on previous Guild practice, as detailed here:

One of the design features that I really liked on older Guilds was the herringbone rosette. For what models and years was that used?

Was a hallmark of the "Vintage" series, as in "DV"and "JV" and "GV".

Can see it used as early as the '87 catalog on several models, though, before the "V" series were introduced. I first saw it on early DV52's, shows up in the '92 catalog.

For sure DV6's had 'em in '96, but DV52's show abalone rosettes by the '97 catalog.

Discontinued at end of Westerly ('01), Corona didn't use 'em. Don't recall if it came back later.

Thanks, on the westerly guild site it looks like herringbone on other higher end guitars like D60 Walker, D66, and GF60 that's why I was curious if it was a feature before they standardized on the abalone look.
