The wife and I did a 3 hour practice session yesterday and it gave me a chance to switch guitars and really listen to them, and hand them to her for a comparison and her evaluation. She was the "control subject" playing her mahogany body 2004 Gibson Songwriter.

I started with a '78 G37. It really rang out and blended well with the Gibson. She complained that it was "echoey". I let her play it and she was not impressed, and said that it was nice, but "echoey".

Next up was an '00 DCE-3 BL. Sounded great, but she complained that it did not have enough bottom end.

Last was a "99 DCE-5. That checked off all the boxes. It has been my go to acoustic for a few years now. Maybe it was the familiarity of it, but no comments from the peanut gallery on that one.

Going to do this again with some of my other Guilds when the opportunity arises. These were the ones I had in the house at the time.

Cool experiment! It’s always interesting to me how my guitars sound when I have a chance to sit in front of them vs. behind them. Hearing how they project out into the room is another reason why I like having a friend along when I hit the guitar shops.

Thanks for sharing. I'm a bit surprised on the G 37. I consider that to be a superb sounding Guild. I sold mine as part of reducing inventory but I always liked that guitar,

I wouldn’t describe the G-37 as echoey at all. It has that well defined but super short sustain that is typical of maple. Maybe in a smaller room it makes more echo

This one sustains for days. The notes are well defined and when soloing it cuts without being overbearing.

The wife is picky, and her solid frame of reference is her Gibson. I use that as a basis for finding guitars that play well with hers. She is one of those people that play just one guitar and is not really interested in any others and believe me, I have tried with her.

Sustain isn't the same as the echo. Mine sustains fine too, as in the notes ring out for a long time. The echo of a note however is rather well defined but super short which is a characteristic of maple.

And to be fair, if I had one guitar, there is no Gibson that'd quite cut it for me. Most of them always thin out too much up the neck.

"Echoey" was my wife's description. She can be creative. BTW, Her Gibson is one of the very good ones from Montana.
