Has anyone done this? I’ve done it with my basses and it has worked wonders for feel, but there I just removed a little nitro or poly. Has anyone done it with a thick, colored finish? How far do you go? Through the color? Or just the clear coat? If it was a bass with a clear finish, I’d go down to the wood and use tru oil to seal it...but an acoustic seems like a different animal.

I'd tape it off take the tuners off and use 0000 steel wool and just try to get a real even, soft, satin look and feel. No reason to take the color off. Satin necks are so nice to play on. I haven't modified any but the same process I've done to get the neck ready for another coat of lacquer. Of course, you might try a light coat of satin lacquer, but that would require more prep work for the spraying. I'd start with the 0000 steel wool and if it's not the exact look and feel you want, then mask off the faceplate, fretboard, and the guitar and you're ready to spray satin lacquer after a tack cloth.

Thanks for the advice!

does anyone know what the finish is on an 89 guild westerly acoustic? Is it nitro or poly?

It's NCL. Which is nice to spray over because it just melts into the old finish. Lacquer is it's own solvent. But if you just dull it with 0000 steel wool, you can see if it's okay for you and if it's not the look or feel you're looking for, then you've already prepped the surface for the next coat!!

Thank you. Good to know. I’ll start with some steel wool and then move to acetone if I want to go further.

I don’t like the feel of the back of the neck and want to strip it down possibly to bare wood. I work in a bass shop, so I know what I’m doing with this stuff. Just checked in with my shop manager about how to go about it.

u should leave it alone. i only know of 3 other GF-25-Blacks. yours would be the 4th. i think you will devalue it if u sand or refinish the neck. if u play it enough the gloss will turn to satin

Is it really rare?

Unfortunately, it also has cigarette burns on the headstock (not mine...was there when I bought it in the 90’s), so the value is low as it is.

yeah you don't see very many of them especially in black. what a nice guitar. i'd leave it like mavuser said, but in the final reckoning it's already damaged and it's your guitar. Do you have a photo to post?? Please??

I have a resonator with a very smooth neck. I think you could use a little scotchbrite to nock off just a little gloss. Don't do very much.
