No Guild content but.....
Just got back from seeing the Dave Rawlings Machine in downtown Lawrence. What a band, he is an innovative instrumentalist, and Gillian Welch is .....Gillian. The rest of the band is top notch also. Very exciting performance. They put a new spin on classics as "This Land is Your Land", "CC Rider", "Candyman" etc., as well as their originals. If they are in your area check 'em out.

Feel bad to rub it in (maybe not so bad  ), when I was small (~5/6yo) my mother used to take to me to Woody's concerts for children, and in 1963 at the Newport Folk Festival I went to the Blues workshop which that afternoon featured John Hurt. I saw Dave van Ronk do "Candyman" many times.
Don't know if they ever tour outside of North America but you can check either his or Gillian's web site. Dave has a new CD (hard to believe its his first as the main artist, called "A Friend of a Friend", you'll enjoy it.

Hey Peter Parker.......:D No, Not rub at all!......but indeed LUCKY YOU! you Lucky devil......All that, and ANY of that , would have been VERY NICE to have experienced. Some great memories to be having there......AND VAN RONK TOO!!!! ( love his stuff! I read books about those days in the Villiage.....MUST have been GREAT!) WOW!!! This stuff has obviously made a lasting and positive impression on YOU to this day! See, THATS great!!!
Thanks Spider, I will indeed find this 'Friend of a friend' album, yep, i am sure to enjoy it too! Might be a stockig stuffer from Santa!
Hey i looked at the youtubes you put up, then watched them do "Queen Jane Approximately' and 'White rabbit' ( a very good job Too!) , then followed That to David and Gillian singing "I hear them all' by Old Crow Medicine show.....THAT spured my curiosity, so then i went to see the old crows show themselves do that song ( Great....ANOTHER CD I WILL HAVE TO BUY!!). Filmed in New Orleans post Katrina...still a glorious mess! On another one of the Old crow songs (forgot which one...but GOOD song too).....David and Gillian play a sneaky role as ticket takers at a circus sort of Girly show whist the Medicine show plays their song. COOL.....Its all connected! No suprise there!
Yep , 2 more cd;'s on my must get list!!! :D Ps. Gillian often plays her D-25, ...when she's not harrassing that Gibson. Did she play it this time around? regardless.....I shall check the website and their schedule.....and HOPE!!
Cheers Spidey 8) SG

Yeah those were the days for folk, Ochs, Baez, Dylan, New Lost City Ramblers, Pete Seeger, The Weavers, many others. First time I heard van Ronk was on a recording of sea chanteys by his friend Paul Clayton, kind of made the assumption that he was a nautical singer, first time I saw him in person was kind of a surprise  The Candyman that van Ronk and Rawlings do is much closer to the Gary Davis version than Hurt's version. The Reverend was another one that I saw back then, and friends took lessons with him. Just last week I was talking to a local Lawrence musician and sound tech originally from DC who went north to study with Davis! Talk about a small world. This same musician when he was a teen helped Eva Cassidy move rocks when she was doing landscape work.
Gillian stuck to the Gibby but she and Dave did some banjo licks also. They did it as straight 2 hr. set with a half hour encore :D must have lost 10 lbs (5 kilos?) during the show.
Another one I saw a couple of times was Karen Dalton, you can find a few rare videos on YouTube. She was kind of shy, and did not play out that much, had a host of demons and really lived the blues.
Am listening to some Rory Block lately, have to get "The Lady and Mr. Johnson", would love to see her live.

Friendly neighborhood Spiderman! :D Man spidey........YOU HAVE SEEN some great stuff!!!! I consider myself fortunate to have been exposed to their ALBUMS at an early age! ( a 15 year older brother.)....YOU, have take that up about 20 notches!!! Thats great! You should write down your memories of that time..........They would be interesting to someone somewhere down the line, even your family! WRITE IT !!!!
Man, i read about Karen Dalton in Dylans Bio, then in another book about the Villiage days....but until THIS AM , never heard her sing, went to youtube and watched alot of them......WOW! yep.....ANOTHER CD (S) I shall have to acquire! Love that style.......and Yes, man Tragic life story there.
Rory Block? ....YOu probably walked past her dads sandle shop in the Villiage! Yet, here, more tradgedy ( not her per say, but she lost her musically gifted son, so THAT is a world of unending hurt) ....i have 2 of her DVDs from homespun teaching the guitar styles of Robt Johnson.....really good! She knows how to cover his style alright! Highly recomended!
Eva Cassidy.....My daughter, almost 8 years old loves her music! And...the reverand?....A great mojo man who certainly left an impression with MANY a folkie. Seeing HIM would have been a treat! I have him on DVD.......WHAT a CHARACTER!! :D Him and Lightnin together would flirt up ANY woman in the room!
OCMS!!!!! THANKS for the heads up! :D YES!!!! Sat 27 March, i can SEE them in Sydney!!! Its GOTTA HAPPEN!!! We ( Wife and I) plan to be there! Thanks Again Spidey! SG

Can't really take credit for it, just happened to be in the right place at the right time. There were other places that had the same vibe but I wasn't there, Chicago in the early 70's with Bonnie Kolloc, John Prine and Steve Goodman; Houston and Austin a bit later with Guy Clark, Townes van Zandt, Nanci Griffith, David Olney, Eric Taylor, Blaze Foley, etc.. Of course you have the Emmanuel brothers. In Minnesota i used to see Koerner, Ray & Glover and various permutations thereof, but not much else.
Probably did walk past Rory's father's shop, but that early on he was displaying his sandals in the street, not being much of a fashonista I would not have noticed. I still wear my 50 yo Florsheims from high school on dressy occasions.
Last time I saw Gary Davis was in a coffeehouse on Harvard Square in 1967. An acquaintance from the Museum of Comparative Zoology where I was doing research was from South Carolina and I took her. He spent more time telling fantastic stories than singing. She said it was a scene out of her childhood in the south.
Still have a ton of LPs packed up somewhere, lots of Folkways, Baez, Ochs, Weavers, Newport Folk Festival. Now that vinyl is back who knows, may have to find a needle for the record player.
There seems to be much more good music now then back then, even if it is unknowns outside of a small regional circle. Lawrence has a fantastic bunch of talented musicians here, but unknown outside of NE Kansas (maybe including Kansas City Missouri), which is a shame but it means I get to see them in tiny venues and really get acquainted with them and we become friends.
My kids know the stories, my daughter started guitar a couple of years ago and is writing songs now.
