So it starts out in 13/4 time, then switches to 6/4?

Basically. Folks with access to the sheet music say 13/8 and 12/8 but I can't get that just from listening.

I used to be scared of non-standard time signatures. Some wise person told me that if I figured out pulse or beat correctly everything was just a succession of 2 beat groupings and three beat groupings. That helped a lot in trying to sing or play.

As an exercise do you hear "Take Five" as 2-3 or 3-2?

Great video!

Perhaps we should just call it "Brubeck Time"?

Well the Grateful Dead have recorded a lot that doesn't fit the expected meter and you can easily find other time signatures in the classical world.

Great video clip, but I'm confused . . .

The UTube poster says that he started with video of a Dave Brubeck Quartet performance of Take Five, and edited it with music he put together, covering a song called Golden Brown by a band named The Stranglers.

Whew.

And the UTube guy played the sax that you hear, not Paul Desmond.

Also, I think I hear this time signature as 7/8?

Oh, and per Frono's (probably rhetorical) question I hear Take Five as 1-2-and-3, 1-2.

Paul Desmond has lovely tone , plays sort of like a straight Cannonball Adderley, and looks very straight, but he was a pretty bad-a$$ dude. Sort of the dark Yang to Brubek's very straight Yin.

To quote Colonel Potter, "There's not enough "o's" in "smooooth to describe that!"

Sherman…T…Potter…
I like the Frank Marino studio version “Finish Line” solo section better.
