You sure that's not one of your Newfies?

My ferocious guard Newfs didn't so much as lift their heads while this was going on, though to be fair, I was sitting right here with the security camera screen in my face and didn't notice either.

Geez, I didn't even know you had bears in Jersey. We've got loads of 'em up here in NE Mich. They are fun to watch but truly do mess things up when they set their mind to it.

Geez, I didn't even know you had bears in Jersey.

Well they reintroduced them a while back from Pennsylvania into northwestern New Jersey and they have been spreading south ever since. The problem is that housing development has been spreading northwest and the two are not getting along well. It's pretty pricey real estate up that way and the "new" locals aren't to happy about sharing their new property with bears!

...and the bears are probably not that happy to share their environment with the "new" locals!

That's very rare footage of the Urban Sasquatch in it's natural environment! LOL. It is just as good the second time you watch it! LOL :applause:

Poor thing, probably not much to eat out there, and "bearely" anything good in that can...

Looks like a guy could make trash can bear traps if he set his mind to it... not sure about containing the bear once trapped, plastic might not cut it?

nice! yeah bear, moose, and deer population are all on the rise in the northeast. as is residential sprawl. makes for some interesting coexistence! the problem is once a bear gets addicted to human food, it can become a nuisance and possibly a threat to humans. in some cases they are caught and released into the wild, but in many cases they are put down. GAD, may want to hang your trash from a tree! (or at least keep it in the garage or shed)

Well to defend Br,er Bear, you weren't using that trash at the moment so it was kind of up for grabs.

Ware Br'er Bear says hey.

Yeah, ol redneck down the road sez to me a long time ago; "The more trash you got, the more bear you got". The logic is irrefutable... We don't have garbage service and I keep ZERO trash on hand at any time.

Is that a wasp trap on that tree, or a bird feeder?

If a bear gets into your car at Yosemite (it's not pretty when a bear gets in your car), they make it hurt a little worse, or a LOT worse by slapping you with a fine, and hauling your car off...

My favorite was a pic by the warning posters with a wide eyed looking bear inside a Honda Civic, LOlllolololllLLLLLLL!!!!!

Had a friend that was killed by a bear outside of a lodge cabin. The bear had apparently been foraging through garbage. Those suckers are fun to see but they are monstrously strong and can be deadly. But they are nothing compared to their brown bear cousins.

Yep, one of the "Game Warden reality show" (the one based in Maine, I think?) episodes had a segment wherein the trooper was advising a local about proper construction of a garbage shed as the only permanent solution to ongoing activity.
If they can't get to it they'll give up after a few tries and move on to easier pickins'.
Don't recall ever hearing about 'attacks/nuisances here in my neck of the woods though.
We know they're up in the local mountains but it seems they must get enough food in the wild and must avoid humans.
"IIRC" they also hate loud noise. Wouldn't surprise me if one of those compressed air boat-horns-in-a-can would drive one off.

The problem around here is that people are stupid (no surprise) and the bears get accustomed to people being around because it's NJ and people are like a virus.

Anyway, a couple years back someone had a bear in their kitchen. Yikes!

http://pix11.com/2014/07/29/nj-resident-wakes-up-to-find-black-bear-in-kitchen-using-the-sink/

And then...

The problem we have is a different than most. Most people see our dogs and ask, "Is that a bear?" When we see a bear we immediately think, "Holy crap - one of the dogs got out!"

Viruses always get a bum rap/... ;-)

The way I look at it is that the "ongoing problem" is that people won't get rid of their trash in any kind of timely fashion, or ever. I they don't have a [Socialistic?] trash removal system, they will just absolutely cover their land with it sometimes... It's sad and gross, but I've seen it, got many pics of neighbors places over the years where the prettiest things there were the noxious weeds...

That's a bird feeder, empty at the time, about 6 feet from our back door. I went out and shouted at him but he wanted to know if we took orders to go.
