Massachusetts is the same, but everyone calls it a state -- at least the characters that I know, that is. I couldn't even tell you what, if anything, the difference is. But, I grew up in NY, which is not a commonwealth.

Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Virginia are commonwealths. The significance of that once you get past trivia contests is debatable. Someone who objects to one of those places being called a state needs to explain why this country is the United States of America and not the United States and Commonwealths of America. Given the oversized impact three of those had on the formation of the country, if the distinction meant anything at the founding of the country it would presumably be embedded in the Constitution?

Basically commonwealth was the preferred term in colonies with strong ties to Great Britain.

I'm a big D'Addario fan as well. While I mostly lean toward DRs these days, to me D'Addario really does set the standard for great acoustic guitar strings.

There were a few years where (as an "artist") I was getting free stuff from them and they would continually send me new things to try. They just seem to value, care for and about their customers.
