D55 in a cutaway?

I have owned my D55 for about 2 months. I must say that this is one incredible guitar with unbelievable tone. The neck suits me perfectly as does the fit and feel. I had a K&K mini Western pup installed and run it through an LR Baggs preamp. The guitar just sounds so full and rich. I get tons of compliments.

I'm playing in an acoustic duo and would like to add a cutaway to my rig. Does Guild (or any other - Gibson, Taylor? etc) offer a cutaway that would offer the same feel, tone, etc as the D55?

Thanks!

I don't think any of the USA-built dreads have come in cutaway for quite a while, lpaul, but you might want to look at the contemporary models (CO and CV) that do. The Willy Porter guitar has a cutaway, I think.

Im' not sure about the GAD line...

A cutaway model is probably a great suggestion for the New Hartford facility to consider for the future. Good luck, and congrats on your D-55.

I use the same set up with the K&K minis and LR Baggs Para-DI preamp for my D-55. I agree, the sound is awesome, but I do miss the cutaway at times. When I was shopping for a dred, the lack of a cutaway in the D-55 almost turned me off from buying it, but the sound won me over.

I auditioned lots of dreds, including Taylors with cutaways, and found nothing that sounded the same.

So I just live without the cutaway. There are just some songs I can't play on the D-55 'cause of no cutaway.

You might want to look at the Taylor 710, 810, and 910 rosewood dreds with cutaways, but the prices are much higher, and I never found one that sounded as full and rich as my D-55.

Exactly my thoughts!! I did own a Taylor 410 and the D55 blows it away in all respects (IMO - of course!)

I have a Larrivee 09 cutaway with Baggs Pickkup in it, awesome guitar. A real beauty. If you come across one, any model, you might want to check it out. Jea Larrivee is still a hands on kind of guy who hand picks the logs, that go into his instruments...Steffan

I think there was a Guild D-50C at some point. I thought I saw an old ad for one recently. That would be my pick for what you're looking at.

As others have mentioned, these models are tops in the cutaway Guild line.

F-47RCE - new from Tacoma, not the Corona built ones

F-65CE - not built anymore, but what a nice instrument!

D-40C - also not built anymore - is a cutaway version of the D-40. Kind of what Guild should do with the D-55!

But the new F-47RCE is the best of what you are looking for.

I believe that model was made at Corona. I played it, not a very good guitar. Sounded nothing like a D-50.

Did you see Jeff's post for the DC5e over in FS/FT? DC5e for Sale or Trade? I don't know how it compares to the D55 but it's a cutaway dred and a Guild. I had a friend GASsing for it but he lost his job so couldn't get it.

If you wanted to stay with Guild, the DC5 would have been my suggestion too. It's the closest thing to a D55 in a cutaway that I can think of. They pop up on eBay from time to time.

..

Pretty much echoes my experience, cutaways, unplugged, sacrifice some tone or presence ....or something.

Whoof, check the MSRP on a new F47RCE...3349.99 & thanks ya'll for bumping my DC5.

DC5 design , to my mind anyway, is more similar to G37's & Arched back D25's. Picture a Rosewood cutaway D25 with the heft of a G37 & a Fishman. Tough durable git, plug it in & play. I'd keep it cept my F20 and new Fishman has been a religious experience, & my G37 eats DC5's for breakfast, acoustical anyway.

Your D55 is set up perfectly for stage use. Anything else will be a disappointment. I use the same setup, including the Baggs preamp, everyweek in church and it works well. I do suggest getting a delay unit to give you some nice chorus and reverb.

Play what ya got!
