That model was introduced as G-312 back in 1974, which was the 12 string version of the D-50. Waiting for Hans' second book covering that era Gruhn wrote in his book that during 1987 the G-312 was renamed as D50-12 but also discontinued the same year. So there are not many D50-12 with that model name as it sounds, but it is what the G-312 was.

EDIT: I found an old link where Hans explained it: https://letstalkguild.com/ltg/index.php?threads/d40-12.163751/post-1438418

If I didn't know better, I would think Greg likes his D50. Ain't it great to be enthusiastic about something, especially, a new to you guitar.

Will Sn# tell year? It plays, sounds like a dream!
Yes... this link will take you to an SN chart by year. But it looks like the 50/12 was only made in 1984.

You MIGHT find a date stamp on the neck block, or on one of the braces flanking the sound hole on the top (need a mirror for that one). These would be the dates the rim assembly or top were completed, respectively, and could be days to months before the guitar was actually completed.

Per Gruhn's Guide (#2), your guitar was made in 1987 (as Hans said).

It started life as the G-312 in 1974, became the D-312 in 1986, and then the D-50-12 in 1987.

The D-50-12 was available only in 1987, and then the model was discontinued.

Lovely guitar - Enjoy!

Hello folks,

It's from 1987 and it will have the month and year stamped into the back of the headstock. Something like 2-'87, but I could be a little off with the month!

Sincerely,
Hans Moust

Nice find, Greg. As has already been succinctly discussed, mostly this guitar is known as a G-312. Very pretty wood, Greg, but yeah highly unlikely that it's Brazilian. I think it's just a nice cut of Indian.

Anyway, enjoy!!!!!
