Did a gig in a local coffee house this weekend, and met a guitar player who, after seeing me play, asked if he could play my F-212. Just met him, and as politely as I could, I basically told him nobody plays this but me; it is fragile, I explained.

Then, he showed me his: a pristine Guild D4-12. Well, since you're a Guild player like me, that makes you my friend, and I let him play mine. We switched guitars, mine with his, and vice versa.

I noticed right away, his was louder than mine. Quite a bit. I figured, what gives? He didn't know, not being a technical person. He just knew that his 12 string had a certain sound and he was happy with it. Well, so am I, but I was taken back by the difference in volume between an old F-212, and a mid-90s D4-12.

I would imagine the dreadnought body had something to do to with it. But now I am on a search. Everything is normal with my F-212: Tusq nut, saddle, bridge pins, JLD Bridge Doctor, recent phosphor bronze strings, good break angle at bridge saddle, etc.

Something is damping the sound on my guitar, and I would like to know what it is. There are a few cracks in the top; they seem stable, but would that have anything to do with it? Is the body shape that much of a factor in sound when compared to a Dreadnought?
The sound is balanced, full lows, highs, etc.

Any body have an opinion, based on what I told you?

Here is a link to the sound of it:

Any comments would be appreciated.
