You need to find a store with both Guilds and Martins. You need the guitar that works best for you. A Martin is going to have more low end, The D 55 is going to be balanced. There is a clip of Doc Watson playing a D 55. It may have been a Smithsonian recording. FWIW, the last time I could compare both, I preferred the D 55. My current Martin dred is a very atypical D 35. Very balanced for a Martin, but a D 55 is very hard to beat.

Taylor has a huge artist endorsement budget. I'd never believe anything about preference except for a paycheck. Endorsement deals sell guitars.

Not sure where Frosty has been either, but I miss him. The last I heard from Frosty, he had some type of accident in which he had seriously injured his hand. I hope he's still playing.....tremendous talent.

As far as reviving this old thread, I thought it was a fun one, and if we can still play?

YIKES!!! The thought of Frosty injuring his hand makes me sick!!! I always enjoyed his playing so much. Jeeze. I hope he's okay. People like that need to have their hands protected at all times...... 😩

p.s. - like geoguy said, please NOTE that the topic is fine but this is a 14 year old thread!! Hoooo boy. Frosty hasn't been around in ages!!!

BTW, thanks too for the "approaching middle age" comment. I sort of think of myself as at the upper end of middle age at 49.

Take care,

West

Ha!! That was in 2006! So where do you slot yourself now days????

Oh gosh Bee.....yard work, kids, a pile of grandchildren, still try to exercise regularly, and occasionally play the guitar. I retired after 40 years of service on June 1. I've found myself as captivated by Collings guitars, their history, the direction of the company without Bill Collings, their design, and what goes into them, as I was captivated by Guild so many years ago. I've continued to stay in touch with various LTG members through the years though. I will always love Guild for so many reasons.

Some years ago I went searching for an HD28 and ended up buying a 1976 D55. I liked the more balanced Guild, and like the trebles better on the Guild. Both have marvelous harmonics, the Guild just sounds more balanced.

Here's a clip of me playing it, no effects, straight into the mic you see. I just recently bought a 2006 Tacoma D55, I'll see if I can get a clip to post.

Oh my, I just noticed this thread is from 2006. Oh well, if any one cares, here is my 2006 Tacoma, recorded on my iPad, so quality is so-so.

The 1976 is brighter, more responsive, the 2006, mellower, like butter. Both have gobs of harmonics and sustain.
