Really a 5-man band, since Jack and Ginger were twice the rhythm players of anyone else. You can really hear it in their live recordings: Jack Bruce is playing like some kind of rhythm guitarist/bassist two-headed monster, and Ginger Baker is playing like he has 4 hands AND 4 feet.

And Hot Tuna? And ZZ Top? I know that Rush have huge chops, but I just can't listen to Geddy's voice anymore.
YES! I've always had the most respect for Rush and the talent of those three guys. But I, too, just can't take Geddy's voice; kind of like a sound you would hear at Sea World. I find YYZ one the of most fascinating songs by a Rock group; love the rhythms in it -- and, of course, Geddy's not singing!

Nirvana was for a while. Eventually added a 2nd guitarist.

Never could warm up to Rush.

There is a great, lesser known band that has been on hiatus called Soulive. Keyboards who handles bass duties, great guitarist, Eric Krasnow and a drummer. Though they often record with guest vocalists.

SRV & Double Trouble.
Grand Funk Railroad (pre "We're an American Band")
Maybe we should mention the Jimi Hendrix Experience?
I kind-a have them equal to Cream, but Bruce & Baker outclass Mitchell and Redding by miles and miles if only because both of 'em were magnificent composers as well as better players.

Uh, not sure you can call any of those a true "three piece" band.

So many "three piece" bands really aren't. My daughter and I saw Green Day before the pandemic and they had like nine people on stage, but much like you'd see on an American Idol performance, only the main players get the big lighting.

I think these bands remain three members so they don't have to give the musicians touring with them (sometimes for decades) a cut of the royalties or headline pay. Sure, the main players probably write the songs, but I hate it when bands keep the secondary players in the dark.
