I don't know if this is common but, I was asked to repair one of those S-series guitars because the owner said it wouldn't tune properly.

After much frustration I check the fret placement and it was all over the place. It didn't match any scale length I've ever seen.

No wonder the guitar wouldn't tune properly. The frets were in the wrong places. Very strange.

One of those specific guitars above or some random S-series?

One of those freaky shaped S-60's
Tele I've read enough of your posts to think you know what you're doin'. That's really got my curiosity up. Do you think it was the original fretboard and/or neck?

Yes, the guitar was completely original.

When I had difficulty setting it up, I started checking individual frets with the tuner to see where the problem was. I thought perhaps the nut needed to be compensated or moved. But the readings I was getting from the tuner were just crazy and way out of spec.

So I brought the guitar to a very well respected tech and friend and he put every guitar scale ruler known to man on the fret board and it didn't match anything. It was as if they started at one end slotting the finger board and then lost track of where they were and took their best guess when they started up again. It was random and didn't even make sense mathematically when I broke out the calculator, took some precision measurements and tried determine if it was some sort of custom scale. It wasn't.

I'm not going to say this is the norm for these guitars, but this one was way out of whack!
