I went to a Christmas tree lot yesterday. I usually go early when the selection is best and then put the tree I get into a bucket of water and tie it up to the porch over the man-door on my garage until we are ready for it in the house.

There was a particularly nice noble fir I was interested in. It was quite large, tall and well shaped.

The price was a bit shocking ... but hey its only once a year, and the kids, although they are grown and gone, still get a sense of child-like wonder with a large tree when they come home for Christmas. I tried to negotiate over the price, but the man on the lot was quite inflexible. It was the best tree on the lot, he said.

So against my better fiscal judgement, I bought the tree and laboriously lugged it over to my car. As I was struggling to get it up on to the roof rack where I could tie it down with bungee cords and rope, the lot man came over to help me. "Are you going to put it up yourself?" he asked.

Startled, I replied, "No, I was thinking in the living room."

Broadcast news is full of reports about trees. Supply is low because of economic downturns at least a decade ago and prices are about 30% higher that last year.

I think the supply depends on where you are and if they're locally sourced. All the local tree farms say no shortage. I've heard that those trees trucked in from sine areas (Carolinas?) are down because of weather conditions. In New England, if they're not local they're usually from the Maritimes, and last year would have been a problem with no border crossing. We paid the same as last year at a local farm.
