Quick rant then I'm off to deal with life.

I went to get cash from an ATM - literally the only ATM in my town and probably the only one within a 10-mile radius because I live in the woods.

Anyway, this ATM has been there forever, but they decided it was time for an "upgrade"

Now the card goes in sideways. Took me probably five minutes to figure that one out.

What kind of receipt do you want? Choices are None, Print, and Email (yikes). I chose "none"

I used to be able to take out $1200 at a time. Nope. Tried $1000. Nope. $800? Fine. But I guess that's too simple.

I was presented with a screen that asked my what distribution of 5s, 10s, 20s, and 100s I'd like. What? I guess that's kind of cool, but I was in a hurry so said I wanted 20s. Then it told me that I couldn't have $800. WHAT! Fine - I'll take 8x100. "Sorry, $800 is too much". You *JUST* told me that $800 was OK!

In a rage I hit cancel.

"Please wait - printing receipt."

Precisely why I'm pondering a career change: No license required.

In Ye Olden Day when I read computer science professional journals on a regular basis that was a topic of discussion, usually as an auxiliary to whether "Software Engineering" was enough of a profession that practitioners should be licensed or supervised by a licensed Engineer. The key argument against licensing that I recall was innovation. A structural engineer building a bridge has handbooks that have been refined over decades and a general understanding that "doing it by the book" is the way to go. Most computer related topics don't have that body of knowledge yet and in many ways what was done ten years ago would be wrong today. Things might get licensed but probably not in the next 50 years.

My annoyance is that Square, the ubiquitous payment processor, would associate the provided email address with your credit card number. There was a confirmation of permission step at some point but after that the system assumed it was OK to send the receipt to that email and did so automatically. The UI changed so now I have to press one more button and confirm an emailed receipt. I can kind of understand what problems were reduced by the change but it didn't make my life easier.

Too many industries, including banking, have little concern for customers.

Remember when lighting dimmers were new thing? They used to have a plastic-shaft potentiometer with power-off at zero - as in volume-pot-0 - however many especially older people were trying to turn them like water-tap - thus breaking the shaft at first turn.

Answering machine one day after playing back a message, "Press 1 to call back'.
So I pressed 1.
"Please check the number you are calling!"
I didn't dial it ... YOU DID!

O yeah !!! Now you've got me going. I'm a complete digital-age moron (also a confirmed old fart ludite). I know from your posts that you are definitely NOT one of my kind. Here's the deal: I am completely demoralized by your post; if YOU are driven crazy by this digital sh*t, then I'm sure that I don't stand a chance and should probably just drink the cool-aid. Seriously, I never cease to be amazed that there are folks being paid really good money to come up with these wonderful "upgrades." Why can't they just leave things the F alone? Furthermore . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . told you I'd get going!

HAL: click click wiz wiz clunk blahhh
GAD: I want my money damn it. Open the cash bay door HAL.
HAL: I’m sorry Gary, I can’t do that.
You notice the little cameras in the ATM's have had their irises deleted? So folks don't have HAL flashbacks.

Yeah even volume control's a wussy frill.
Should be factory set at 11 so the commercials don't wake you up when you've dozed off.
