Just brought another nice Guild electric into the stable. I picked up a near flawless S70. It's my first adventure ever with single coil pickups. Lots of tone this thing has! Completely different than the S100 for sure. Check it out:

That looks just great. What are those PUs? DiMarzio? Does this sound like a Strat or what?

To me, the guitar looks like it has the original pickups. If they are indeed original, then what can you guys tell me about Guild single coil pickups? To my ear they sound great but quite different than the humbuckers in my S100. Those two phase switches give this guitar a seemingly endless amount of tone variation. Lots of fun. I haven't put it down yet. :D

The serial number places this guitar about mid-run for 1979.

Yeah, they should be DiMarzio SDS-1 pickups.
They are noisy pieces of junk. I pulled them out and put Lace Sensor Golds in them. Now, I have a Seymour Duncan humbucker PAF (plus or pro, whatever it's called) in it. I am actually getting a Lace Gold/Gold humbucker, to replace the duncan.

A friend of mine has a Fender Custom Shop strat that he paid a couple grand for, and we did a side-by-side on the neck pickup, running through identical amps on identical settings, and they sounded identical... which really annoyed him, because I only paid $190 for the S-70, and about $120 for the set of three Lace Sensor golds.

Sorry, I didn't properly introduce myself: I am Eiffudcm!

Well, I guess it depends on your ears, whether they're junk or not. Singlecoils are going to be noisier than humbuckers - that's the nature of the beast.

Sorry to hear that your S70 pickups were noisy pieces of junk. Mine are not and sound very good to my ears. I don't disagree however, that an aftermarket pickup would be better or at least different. Some time in the future, I may also change out the pickups but not because the original ones are "junk".

I am intrigued that you put humbuckers in your guitar. Thanks for the feedback!

Unless they are Lace :p

Well, I hear that Fender now makes a noiseless single coil too.

Thanks for the welcome, by the way.

I am quite fond of the tone out of the stock Dimarzio pups on my S70.

The biggest issued I had with the stock S70 was that when using the phase switch on the out-of-phase position the tone was too thin. To improve on this situation I added a volume control for the middle pickup, wired in series with the pickup, so that I can adjust its volume. Now when I select the out-of-phase setting I can dial down the middle pickup cancellation to get the right sound I am looking for.

Lately I have noticed that one of the pickups is acting a bit microphonic. One day I'll give all of them a wax bath.

Since my guitar was well worn I didn't have any issues with performing a mod of this type. I would not do it with a guitar in the pristine condition as the one shown above.

Yup, have the the blue/silver/red combo on the Strat. You've reminded me, it's time to change the strings and plug that one in. We're getting 12-18" of snow today, so I have the time.

It's a pretty fun amp. Two 10" speakers, but it's standing on end, as opposed to the Fender Vibrolux. Reverb and tremelo, two inputs, one hotter than the other. Link to GGJaguar's site and his description. It was the only amp that made my Country Gentleman sound good to me. Not a knock on the guitar at all, I'm just not a filtertron guy.
Not as loud as the vibrolux, but a keeper.
