Working on a personal project that requires input from players of genres I'm not familiar with. I need several (4+each?) samples of Rhythm + Lead patterns that can be easily recognized as belonging to a particular genre of music. So when that pattern is played the listener would be able to say: "That's Bluegrass", "That's Latin Jazz", etc. I intend to pick a "Standard" song + arrange it in different keys + patterns that can be easily identified by the listener. This will be posted to several forums.

My friend Ray Bradfield - musician and songwriter but sadly not a Guild owner, would be ideal for your project. One of the best guitarists I know. I've heard one of his songs 'walk the iron road' done by him in many differnt ways - he was challenged to do it Reggae last night and did it straight off - and made it sound just like Bob Marley.

I'll e-mail Ray as not sure if I'll actually see him next week. He's in Wiltshire, England - like me (though did get involved in a Minnesota gig last September), so it will be a matter of how he can get stuff too you. Ill ask his permission to pass you his e-mail address, so all being well, you could liase direct.

Thanks Jerry. Actually with the number of musicians in LTG I'm surprized no one's offerred to share their favorite licks with me. I may not have much to share on a performance basis, but I'm willing to share what knowledge I do have. I'm interested in basic stuff that would be pretty much standard and easily identified as belonging to a specific "type" of music.

Ray hasn't replied yet - I may see him tonight at Bradford on Avon Folk Club. Some of the regulars on this site have posted stuff on You Tube - bit beyond my IT capabilities! We don't have a simple system on LTG where we can just post something onto the site. My own stuff is loosely 'Folk' - covers a host of sins from traditional up to 60s stuff (and later) by Dylan, Paul Simon and so on. I don't have anyting recorded unless Britfolk Radio kept my one song from Folk at the Oak night they recorded back in the Summer and will broadcast an hour of in the Fall. However, as the whole session was 2 1/2 hours my effort (Spancil Hill) may well not survive editing :!:

Hi Bumkneez

Ray has replied at last - not the swiftest of e-mail responders, and I hadn't seen him for a couple of weeks - had to pass messages back through his partner, Judi.

Anyway, Ray has just replied:

"Hi Jeremy

Please forgive my rudeness for not replying sooner. You can give him my address if you like-I don't know if what I do will be of interest, but you never know!

I was in Madcap music in Westbury today and played a VERY nice 1969 Guild which is virtually unplayed.........another for your collection?

Best wishes

Ray"

Ray's e-mail address is:
raybradfield@blueyonder.co.uk

I'll leave it between you how he communicates the different music styles :!:

Your question presupposes a level of knowledge that might not be present. How many players here are comfortable enough with different styles to have useful riffs, patterns and knowledge? How many can play something that fits but don't really know if they are playing bluegrass, newgrass, traditional, new country, classic rock, reggae, etc. etc.

Since people here are usually helpful I'd suggest that either the question was not really understood or you are giving the players more credit than they will take for themselves.

My parents were professional musicians. One of the things that would get trotted out at parties and other fun times was the sheet music for (or a recording of) a collection called "If Mozart had written 'Happy Birthday'". It was the standard tune perfromed or arranged as if various famous composers had written it. What I remember is that I could usually recognize that this one was Mozart and that one was Vivaldi and that other one was Beethoven but I never really could articulate why I recognized them or how I would go about imitating their style.

Thanks Jerry. I've been pursuing info in other areas past few days. Will post some of it on scales shortly.

Thanks fronobulax, your example of "Happy Birthday" was a good example of what I'm trying to do.
I've had some luck scrounging in book stores. Unfortunately my finances don't enable me to purchase the basic instruction manuals for the various genres that would most likely provide what I'm looking for. I agree that the membership doesn't seem to be giving themselves full credit for the level of knowledge and skills they posses.
