Black top SC pickup

I've never seen this pickup with a black top (seen here). It's either white or chrome.

Could it just be an exposed bobbin instead of a cover?

It looks like a plastic insert. The bobbin on the metal ones is completely encapsulated.

saw one like that not long ago. can't recall if it was this same unit or not. it may have been. if there are any orignally built with those black top pickups, it is very, very, few. So possibly/likely a few black pre-date the whites, which pre-date the chromes. or possibly a few blacks are simply randomly distributed, as Guild bought and used whatever was available.

some may have simply been painted black. and perhaps that is the more likely scenario? hard to say.

I like the way it looks in black. The 1964-1966 catalogs still showed her that way but I'd think black was only used in 1962/early 1963 on those Guild pickups.
