For those of you that know who Bill is, I get to see him at a house concert that a friend of mine is holding.
There will be a total of 40 people at the concert.
I have seen Bill several times in the past. He is one of the most entertaining singer/song writers
ever. This is going to be a great time, for sure!

I'll go along with that evaluation, TMG.
We saw him a while back in a very small, intimate setting and he was great.
A unique character, to say the least, with a ton of great songs in his travelin' bag.

TMJ, I was hoping to be there... but Ogden is just too far to go on a school night. Enjoy the concert. Dave

Far from it... I am as much a geezer as anyone here! Actually, I teach college biology, and have 2 hrs of lecture tomorrow. More to the point, it's a school night for my kids (9 and 12), and getting their homework done is a taxing for my wife and I as it is for them (if not more so)!

Hey Don,

Well I would like to report that we have the schoolwork thing well and truly sorted (of course this is with our youngest son, our 2 older boys were much the same trouble as you are having...). The secret is bribery  : we pay him a payment based on each of his grades: A pass gets nothing, but Acheived with Excellence or Merit gets a payment attached to it. Last time we had an add up I owed him over $500.00, but his grades are excellent, theres never any hassles getting him to do his homework, parent teacher interviews are a joy..... :D

Cheers, Ian

Saw another leftie "upsidedowner" last week, a young singer/songwriter named Nicolette Paige out of KCMO, there are a passel of "upsidedowners" out there. I'm surprised to see youngsters doing it also. The ability to get leftie guitars has got to be a lot greater than when Staines started out.
Thanks TMG for "River", have got to find the chords for that one, have not heard it in years. Really fitting in the twilight years. I missed that concert it was only about 2 hours south of me, another regret.
Here is another version of "Roseville Fair" from Nanci Griffith's late 1980s Guild period. Can't figure out the guitar, seems to be a jumbo rosewood, but no Chesterfield or shield?

Harmony H-173 bought in 1960 (retired), Alvarez AC60S 2008, Eastman AC320ce 2008 "Hybrid", Guild GAD-JF30E(blonde) 2008, Guild JF55 1997, Guild D25M 1974, Martin Grand J35E 2009, Martin D12-20 1970

Hey Spider, I think there are some sounds/chord shapes that one can get if you play upside down that are not as easy trying to play in the traditional method...there is a chord change/two note bit in Roseville Fair that is driving me crazy!

From what I can tell from the video, Staines is playing River with a capo at the second fret and in a D-shaped formation (E ?)...closest I have been able to get it is D - D/F# with thumb -G(add E) and A7...hope that gets you started...you get more subtleties you better post 'em!

The concert was great.
My wife and I were front row center. There was only room for 45 people, so there wasn't a bad seat in the house.

Bill played most all of my favorite songs.
He doesnt do many songs that require him to yodel any more.

He played a Taylor 210 guitar and said that the old Martin was getting too fragile for the road.
Bill sure made the Taylor sound good.

I think that Roseville Fair was played in G shape and capoed up 4.
I couldn't tell what chord shape he player River in.
I play it in double drop D and capoed 2 myself.

My wife took a few pictures so I will try to post some, if I can figure it out.

Thanks Bill, looks like a standard D progression with fillips, have to try it this weekend.
TMG glad you enjoyed the concert, maybe can see him out here some time.

I've got copies of a bunch (3-4?) of Bill's songbooks. They're essentially self-published, so I expect they are his transcriptions (tho' he may play the songs differently). I can look at what he gives for Roseville Fair and River this evening, and report back.

I play Roseville Fair in G (formation), capoed 3 (so I guess thats A#). My version is probably more like Nanci Griffiths than Bill's... a little slower than his. Dave

Roseville Fair is a long-time favorite of mine and I have always played it in C.
Nothing fancy needed for a great song that's easy to learn and play.
It's just a sweet song, IMHO.

...I was taught it C as well, almost suits what I have left for a voice in that key, used to sing it as a lullaby to my youngest daughter...but there are nuances or notes that you just cannot get in that chord shape. and its driving me crazy!!!!!

Looking forward to our report GardMan!

A little side note.
I asked Bill why he was playing a Taylor. I saw a vidio on yoytube where he was playing a Guild.
His answer was that the Guild was too heavy.
Where have we heard this before?
