while distance-visiting my dad and step-mother last weekend, i was talking about the acoustic guitars that i had (all Guild). my step-mom asked why i kept talking about the "little Guild". this is a guitar my dad handed down to me years ago, and without any comparison had never seemed that little to her. i heard myself talking about neck length, waist width, size of upper and lower bouts... and suddenly said, "you know what...? i'll just take a photo."

so, since a picture is worth a thousand words, here it is. not the best pic in the world, but here's the 1970 Guild F30 SB vs. 2009 Guild F50 R.

I have to chuckle when someone says they are looking for a parlor guitar, then askes about OMs and 000s. That F 30 isn't really all that small. That body size makes a dandy 12 string too. Nice to have both for sure.

Wow, neat shape and size comparison. Side by side would be great also, so they're not stacked. Flat shoulders to the point of dipping slightly at the neck. Pickguard is really small, ton of room between it and the bridge, and it's black, not tortoise?

It's a pretty dang close cousin to my '71 that lived an hour away from Westerly it's whole life, til I acquired it. Mine went through the school of hard knocks a bit more than yours, but still a knockout guitar with "lusty" tone ;] I always described it as "lush", until I read Guild's descriptions.

Cool picture, and that F30 is awesome!

thanks! my dad bought it used at Schmitt Music in the early 1970s, and it's been with him, or me, ever since. it's the guitar i learned on in my teen years (until my dad wanted it back), and then returned to me for good in 2007. i recently told my wife that it's my "fire guitar". although i am very fortunate to have a handful of beautiful guitars, if there was a fire, and all living creatures were safe... this is the one guitar i would rescue if i could. the legacy from my father here is just too strong.

more details here, if you're interested. :)

wow... what a gorgeous burst on that!

funny, i was originally going to do a side by side, but for a quick comparison i decided to go with stacked. i think i will go back for another comparison shot, and include my GF25 in the lineup.

i have to admit i think most of the "road wear" on mine is from when i was a teenager and my dad loaned me his guitar.

re. the pickguard, it *is* tortoise... just not very tortoise-y. mostly black with some light pattern towards the lower bout. i think you can see a bit better in these photos:

I've also noticed that people get sizes confused. They'll call a concert sized a "parlor guitar" and .... parlor guitars are super small. Using Martin nomenclature I'm not sure what, maybe an 0?? But they're small and it's even different between brands sometimes. Tomorrow I'll take a photo of my Taylor GC-8 (grand concert in Taylor speak) and my Breedlove Oregon Concert Rogue (again, concert size but bigger, thicker and longer scale). I'd like to see them side by side.......

Never mind, I couldn't stand it and took the photo tonight. These are both "concert" guitars. I love them both but the Taylor is far smaller and short scale, which I love but if you wanna do something other than lap top strumming or fingerstyle and you wanna get REAL..... better grab the Breedlove. Totally different guitars.

That's a nice shot. Thought at first it was black, for a split second, but I seen it before and blue is nice. It seems like since I bought the Martin Black Smoke, all I see is black guitars. Never was into colors, but now I like black, and I do have an old black Strat.

Yes, a Martin 0 size (13 1/2 inch lower bout) is about the maximum size for a parlor guitar. Most are smaller, such as a Martin Size 1 (12 3/4 inches), Santa Cruz PJ (12 3/8 inch) and luthier-built Wingert (12 1/2 inch) and Lichty (12 1/2). Even these are on the larger end of the spectrum.

In this shot just lying on my bed you can see the blue a bit better. The Myrtlewood back and sides are darker and more blue, the spruce comes up a little grayer. You can also see the depth it has which gives it a lot more power. This guitar can do anything!!

Little Monty Python voice, Terry Jones actually;

Just a slight guitar habit really, it's really not a problem at all. I can stop anytime, in fact I haven't bought anything in... I can't even remember. Do you want to see others? ;]]
