This may be silly, and just wander on if it is....

I find that the scent of my Guild DV-4 is just the most wonderfully calming and comforting smell I know. I have several guitars and mandolins, but this is the one! Its a Tacoma made mahogany model. Well, its the prettiest mahogany I've ever seen, too, as beautiful to my eyes as the nice quilted stuff I've seen. It looks a bit like Khaya, swirly deep purple and brown patterns vertically. Schweet.

Then there's the sound, and either I am growing to love it more or it is opening up. Don't care which, I just love this guitar.

We need smell-o-vision here at LTG! :) (Don are you listening??) :D :D

The aroma of a guitar is not a trifle, in my opinion. I think a good-smelling guitar makes you more inclined to take it out of the case (when it's stored) and play it. This may sound incredibly goofy, but I had a cedar/mahogany Taylor that I used to take out precisely for that reason. Had a wonderful smell to it.

A really musty or smoky guitar has the opposite effect, in my opinion, even if it has mojo (if you know what I mean).

I have a Tacoma rosewood, and it smells pretty good too. I think Indian rosewood is something of an acquired taste, but I like it.

Chicago of course
Good morning and happy Sunday everyone. Finally some lovely weather in Chicago. I hit the garden center yesterday--stop me before I empty the bank account...

I agree both on the smell and appearance of the DV4. Mine, too, has a lovely, quilted ripple in the grain...the satin finish highlights it. And the aroma is very fresh-sawn lumber. Very clean.

Now, as far as the old D25 I picked up off EBay...whew, she stank like an ashtray when she arrived, and the case was the culprit. I Febreezed the living s**t out of it and left it open for a long time, and then Febreezed it again. Eventually, both the case and the guitar attained a somewhat "neutral" smell, but I'm afraid my D25 can never match the DV4 in that tactile competition. Of course, the heavy finish on the D25 has to have a lot to do with that, too.

Speaking of the DV4, I put new strings on both guitars last night, and compared both guitars. Surprisingly, with these strings (bulk PB 12's bought off Sam Ash for CHEAP, but good tone and ring) the DV4 has slightly darker tone. The D25 seems just a hair more to the treble side, and has slightly longer sustain. I love 'em both, and since no one's indicated any interest in the DV4, I'm happy to have the solid 'hog to compliment the arched lam on the D25.

Plus, when I open the DV4's case, she immediately air freshens the room!

At times the sweet smell of my all mahogany Martin 000-15 still reminds me of the day I bought it new 6 years ago. Something special about the smell of a Martin...

from "The Care and Feeding of Your Acoustic Guitar" by Janis Ian, under "Choosing A Guitar 101"

Buy what you like....
Listen...
Look at the instrument....

Taste and smell. A lot of the input we receive comes through our noses and mouths. Put your mouth against the sound hole and breath in simultaneously through your mouth and nose. Does it smell good? musty? fresh? An old (or “vintage”, if you’re a salesman) guitar may have layers of dust in there – you can clean that. But an old guitar can also have mildew, and you can’t get rid of it. Make sure the guitar smells okay to you.
Feel....
Trust your instincts....

I agree with Chazmo - the smell of the guitar is very important! I had a T-100 that had a musty smell, and I never could get used to it. It's all I noticed when I took it out of the case.

One photo of the beautiful mahogany DV-4:

Another angle showing a bit of the sides:

And that's my old Gibson A4 on the side (about to go in for some repairs, so no strings, bridge or nut!)

I’m not disputing the fact that some guitars may indeed “smell good”. Honestly it makes perfect sense. BUT…what about us that own a D46? The sides and back are ash! I mean, do you really want to stick your nose in an ash hole to see what it smells like?!?! :p  I’m sorry…I just couldn’t resist. By the way Clark, that is one pretty piece of mahogany.

Oh yes, that is very nice !

Especially so since it's a hand-rubbed ( presumably ) finish.

Very nice indeed.

Alas, the only smell I have noticed from my guitars was when the JS had been stored for several years without opening the case. When I finally got it out of the doghouse, "musty" is probably the best thing to say about it. However being back in the playing rotation plus leaving the case open in the sunlight has made things much nicer. (And the smell was with the guitar and not just the case.)
