Now I gotta look up John Abercrombie.

I remember the name.

I remember when no one in the music education field was sure whether to take Berklee seriously or not. Some of that was just the typical adventures of a start-up and some of it was the whole genre thing - "Our jazz department is tiny for a reason and we don't even take rock seriously". I do think Berklee has proven itself, however.

Saw him play with Jack DeJohnette and Dave Holland at a tiny club in a small town in Wisconsin in my college days. Amazing. Also surprised at what a great pianist Jack is.

His fellow Ralph Towner too is a master of Guild guitars ; he uses a 12 strings wonderfully in Jan Garbarek's album called 'Dis'. On 6 strings guitar he uses some classical made (don't remember by who). This album, on both instruments, features the most outstanding guitar playing I've ever heard. No-one plays like that, 100% unusual and original. And so tasty...

I have seen him in a wide variety of settings. He was a great player, and mostly he played electric. In the early days, he seemed to favour highly pimped Melody Makers.

His 70s and early 80s stuff now sounds very dated because of effects pedal/box use. It is still good stuff but ...

It is interesting how brain, fingers, and guitar never really seem to go out of fashion but how effects come and go.
