Ever since I first started reading up about the b50 I've been dreaming about having an acoustic bass that can actually be heard in an acoustic jam without amplification. My problem is that, considering my apartment rent, food, and constant car expenses, there is absolutely no hope of me being able to afford and/or justify a b50 or b30 in the next decade or two. I also considered the Tacoma thundercheif bass as it's a bit cheaper and still said to have great volume and projection, but alas they still run at least $900, so they're out of the question too.
My solution.... on the cheap, I picked up a blemished one of these:

Couldn't be happier! In shipping to the original buyer (when it was new) it took a hit to the treble side of the body which left a nasty gash and separated the top from the side. I took it upon myself to do the repair with some craft wood glue (i know hide glue is recommended but this was a super cheap buy and the wood glue did the job just fine). Success!
The tone is sort of how you would expect an upright with big fat round wounds to sound... but jamming with a singer, dreadnaught, and a flute, it sounds just like an upright and cuts through the mix effortlessly. The action on these is relatively high and it's not intended for any victor wooten wankage, but it's an absolute delight for acoustic blues/folk jams.
Also, when I go camping and to festivals in the summer, I don't have to worry about bringing a super-expensive piece of Guild art along with me :)
Finally, here's a photo of me jammin away with my beefy new mexican pal:

Cool bass Ingo, but I like your dog even better! I've wanted a German Shepherd for what seems like forever, and it's sad that the breeders (much like Corgi breeders) have really screwed up the breed in recent years.

Happy to say that Jenny is a Belgian Shepherd. That means no saggy back/hips or the related problems. We picked her up from the SPCA 3 years ago and she's an absolute perfect dog. The only problem is that she's so attached that she's only willing to sleep if there's a spot in a family-member-occupied bed she can take :D

That's interesting. I have a couple of dogs (and a couple of cats too) that are total bed hogs! curiously enough, I made some inquiries into a Belgian Malinois, as they don't have that falling down behind look that most GSDs have these days, and was offered this beautiful boy

I was sorely tempted, but passed for now as I really don't want three dogs.

Wow. Stunning little fella! If I was a millionaire I would put all my money into starting and maintaining an orphan dog ranch. Well... maybe I'd spare a few grand for a nice B-50 and a 67 SFB-II ;)

Great aspiration, mellow. I love that attitude. Jenny's a lucky (& beautiful) gal.

We just rescued another Border Collie and she is as sweet & talented (frisbee) as can be.
I won't even speculate as to why anyone would just give her up.

Anyway, congratulations on the Guitarron! Very cool.

hideglue,
That collie sounds wonderful. Jenny doesn't do frisbee... she prefers mauling stuffed animals

sandy,
Scale is about 26 inches. A little odd at first but I managed to get used to it fairly quickly

Border Collie
I generally have as little to do with dogs as possible. However I remain terribly impressed by a 10+ year old Border Collie with arthritis who decided two loose Rottweilers running towards her five year old human charge in stroller were a threat. She got between them and the stroller, stood her ground and they eventually turned tail and ran back the way they came.

@mellow - nice although the scale length and the absence of frets would put it way out of my comfort zone.
