Just about to buy one of these - late 70's?

Anyone any tips on possible problems to look out for or general thoughts on this bass?

thanks

Welcome.

Can't help - comes from a time period when I have no hands on experience. Maybe Grot will chime in?

Chime Time!

The B300 series of basses tend to be a bit headstock heavy and therefore suffer from the dreaded "neck dive". Some people have no problem with this and other people hate it. When I used to play a B302 standing, I fastened a "dog snap" to my strap and then would snap it to a belt loop on my pants to keep the strap (and bass) from rotating. It worked like a charm. And while weight is relative to the user, the B300 series while maybe not as heavy as a Fender Precision, is a lot heavier then a Guild Pilot. The pick-ups on the B300's sound great though with some "old school funk thump!"

Thank you for the info. Do you know if there are manuals for it available anywhere?

Not sure what you mean with manual, here is a copy of a brochure: http://i969.photobucket.com/albums/ae177/drewfx1/GuildB301B302.jpg
And an ad: http://www.guitar-list.com/sites/default/files/mygearpics/guild-B-301-ad.jpg

If you want to check the serial number and built year you can have a look here on page 3 of the PDF file there: http://www.guildguitars.com/support/dating_your_guild/
