Just got a call, in office today.

A friend of a friend of a friend's friend has a D-60 he would like to pass on. From what research I've been able to see online it appears to be a maple version of a D-55 save for the arched back a la mon F-412...(My thinking it would make a nice roommate for the F-412).

Anyone have one/had one/played one?

Prior to any good natured haggling by the time I pay for shipping it will be close to $1,700. In line? Too much?

I love my maple 12's, never had a maple 6 string

Trouble is, then I'd have a D-25, D-26, D-40, D-60, D-70.....Which would lead to a D-50, (or D-55), D-30, D-35...blah blah blah...ooh and I'd like to try a D-15 as well.

Did your friend say it had an arched maple back? IIRC, there also was a rosewood B/S (and maybe even flat maple B/S) D-60 models, as the numbering system got changed around during/after the Gruhn era.

Regardless of which model, I would think $1700 shipped would be a pretty decent deal on any of them, if there in VG condition.

Think Richard P. has one but not sure about selling. Worth an "ask."

Bet he does!! Surprised if he doesn't.

It appears to have the snake head vs the old paddle. He hasn't sent a picture yet w/a serial number. Has original case and he states tons of saddle left.

I have the Maple arch back and it is superb, it really is. Big voice and great tone. $1,700 for that model in nice shape and with OHSC is really good. If he wants to sell and you decide not to go that route I am a person of interest. Actually, I'm not at all interesting and in fact, am quite boring. But, that being said I would be interested in that guitar (assuming no issues) at that price. You really should buy it though. I can pretty much guarantee you'd be impressed.

Yes to the rosewood.
The original D60 was the "Johnny Cash" version with rosewood flatback and Gruhn snakehead headstock, prototype was pitched to Johnny by Jere Haskew on a plane flight.

The arched maple back version came later.

From post #6 in this thread, note the context is about an instrument that was actually a re-labelled version of the G-45 Hank Williams:
http://www.letstalkguild.com/ltg/showthread.php?164806-Mysterious-Guild-D60
Hello guilded1,

Welcome! The explanation is quite simple. Your guitar started life as a G-45/Hank Williams Jr. model, which was reintroduced during the first half of the '90s. Sales weren't all that great so during 1994 it was decided that the G-45/Hank Williams Jr. model would be discontinued but that the model would still be available as the D-60 albeit without the Hank Williams Jr. name inlayed into the pickguard. The D-60 name had been used before for one of the models that derived from the original Gruhn/Walker designed line of instruments from the mid-'80s. However, that particular D-60 had rosewood back & sides and was discontinued during the very early '90s.
So, to revive the D-60 name for a different guitar was not really a good choice and that's were some of the confusion these days comes from. Your guitar is one of the G-45/Hank Williams Jr. models ( with a G-45 serial number) that had been left over at the factory and was re-labeled as a D-60.

No, the D-55 always had the wider headstock and the D-60 did get the wider headstock at a later date during the '90s together with several other features but that is beyond the scope of this question.

Yes, we would love to see some photos!

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

I have a D65-S which is similar except with the neck of a D55 in mahogany and some fancy tuners and a signature. If it's anything like mine, grab it!! You're gonna LOVE THAT GUITAR! :encouragement:

Go for it! The return policy makes it a no-brainer!

What's amazing is this was sold to GC. Their policy is 60% of the market price. 60% of $1,800 is $1,080. That seems like giving it away...

Several pics sent by a nice fellow at GC.
I like the decent amount of saddle and break angle - action looks high.
Looks like a reasonably well-kept instrument.

Think it's just semantics between our interpretation of "high" but think that's late enough for 'em to have already implemented the set-up spec of 5-6/64" action on bass E and 4-5/64ths on treble.
Tough call from a phot but I think it's "there' and know some folks consider that set-up to be a bit high anyway.
But hey it's a lot easier to lower it a tad to owner's taste than to stretch the saddle back up to height.

Poor thing is now located at the GC in OK...not that there is anything wrong w/Oklahoma.

That is the second time it was purchased and came back.

Smarter people than me must know sumtin' but now it is offered at 0% interest....which frankly is what I should have in this...0% interest.

Still pretty compelling..

NO I will not buy it.

Huh. Can't imagine what that sumtin' is. At least the GC in OK show several photos - definitely a maple archback. I ain't in the market for a dread, but for anyone who is, I'd expect a hefty discount on this one....
